Looking for advice from online music collaborators

Hi guys,
I'd love to hear from anyone who's attempted to or successfully worked with other musicians or producers that they've reached out to online.
About me - I'm a guitarist/pianist who's got a few tracks that I'd like someone to contribute to, and I have a few questions:
- How do people usually go about collaborating with other musicians online?
- What's the biggest challenges or frustrations you have when you collaborating tracks?
- Are your experiences collaborating with musicians online positive or negative? Can you tell me a story about it?
Thanks guys, I really appreciate it!

We tried some free-form collaboration here but it bogged down rather quickly.
I did some collaboration with someone I met through this site, and the first song worked well, the others not so much. But we've met in person and are friends now!
I think for collaboration to work, the participants have to have the same 'vision' for the music, otherwise it becomes one person 'doing tracks' for the other, not a true collaboration.
Like any recording it starts with one person doing the basic (or scratch) tracks. Then they send the files (dropbox, for example) to the other person. If both use the same DAW then you can send project tracks, otherwise you convert to WAV and send the tracks that way.

What ever tracks you have recorded and want others to work on, why not make those songs available to others and see if you get something back that works. I am new to Bandmix and dont know the in's,and outs of this service, but I for one would listen to what you have.
My home studio has grown in size, as are my skills in recording. Musically, I play quite a few instruments. Send out a WAV file or two.

Haven't been posting here lately. I still lurk.
Back in 08 I found Jimmy Danger here. He kills with his marshall. I play guitar, bass, drums, and keys. But not like Jimmy. I am a singer first. So jimmy posted an instrumental track. He didn't know me yet. So when I asked him to send it he kind of blew me off.

Later he complimented one of my videos. So I asked again. Send me that track! He did. This is it.

Here is my advice. It's going to be tailored to you. You play, you write, you record. Go find singers who you like on youtube and....
singsnap.com.
On singsnap you'll find bad, mediocre, good, and a few great singers. Sign up for a free account and send a message to someone who you'd like to collaborate with. The beauty of finding someone there is that they are stuck. Most can't play. Therefore they will likely see that they need you to have more musical fun. This is not a proven method. It's just something I see with potential. Go get 'em.

And this should be obvious. If you want someone to respond have music ready. I don't see any on your profile. So post up a few of those singer ready songs. Send a singer a link. Tell them you like what you heard and ask if they would like to collaborate. Logistically all you need to do is send them a wav via dropbox, google drive, or the like.

Hey Paul! Looks like the OP was a 'drive by', hasn't been back since posting the same question in 2 places.

Mike,
If you are still looking for online collabs there are many sites totally dedicated to that.
Kompoz is one of them.
give them a look.
http://www.kompoz.com/I used to spend an inordinant amount of time there and found some good projects.
Obviously with a public forum you can get more "help" than you want.
Good luck
Tom

I'll second Tom's advice to check out Kompoz.com I've played a role in creating a number of songs there (I'm a lyricist). You can hear one of the songs, Shadow In the Night, on my Bandmix profile. It should give you some idea what can be done there.

Paul - that work with JimmyD was pretty radical. Good stuff.

I know this is an old post but as mentioned before, Kompoz.com is the best online collab site I've found. I've done over 100 songs on there. Great place, folks tunes of every genre and musicians.
