May he rest in peace....

I'm from Beaumont TX and he was a hometown hero, along with Janis Joplin, Gatemouth Brown, The Big Bopper, George Jones, and many more. He and Edgar were regulars on a daily local TV show when they were not yet teenagers called "Dialing for Dollars" (Mentioned in Janis' "Buy me a Mercedes Benz" song)

I saw him several times but the most memorable was between Christmas and New Year's in 1979. Had a booking agency back then and we had booked the Alan Haynes band from Houston into a club called Fat Dawg's in Beaumont. Alan Haynes is a Johnny Winter clone and back then he used Johnny's Woodstock band (minus Johnny & Edgar) with Tommy Shannon (who went on to play with Stevie Ray) and Uncle John Turner.

Anyway, Johnny was in town to visit his parents and about midnight comes strolling in and the 25 people who were there got treated to an amazing jam session.

I remember hearing back then that albinos had a short life expectancy, so both he and Edgar have proven that to be poppycock. Edgar lives in Malibu CA and we had a long email conversation when Julian LeCroix (brother of White Trash singer Jerry LeCroix) gave me his address.

Both of them are/were real humble and genuinely friendly guys. Texas will be in mourning this week...

Johnny was a hero to me since his first albums. 'Johnny Winter And' is one of my all time favorite albums.

I'm happy he lived this long but hate to think he is gone.

RIP Johnny Winter

I was turned on to Johnny Winter And Live back in 9th grade while taking showers after football practice.. to this day I do not know which version of "Mean Town Blues" I like the best.. the version with Rick Derringer is nice, since Derringer can basically keep up with Johnny, but the version when It's a 3 piece after the McCoys left is probably tastier.. I think Shannon and Turner are back again after the Nashville session album (2nd Winter)

I seen him in L.A. in 1988, when I wasn't gigging. Johnny put on one hell of a show, he had the crowd going.
He didn't look to healthy and didn't move much. People who didn't know who he was, became fans that night, including my fellow Metal Heads who had shallow roots when it came to Texas Blues !!!!
Rest In Peace Johnny Winter :(

I would have gladly taken guitar lessons from him, I think it was Billy who gave us a link to a Johnny Winter biography web page a few months ago.. I actually read most of it... and got a kick how Johnny in an interview with some mag editor or something, said he and his brother would argue over what was better musically.. Edgar always tried to turn Johnny onto jazz music but Johnny would counter Edgar with a blues record of some sort.. my twin brother also played guitar and we were always sort of on the same page for what we wanted to jam on.. now, I can't even get my brother to even jam with me let alone work up something.. sorry for the rambling, and distracting from the essence of Johnny Winter..

That's good stuff, right there. I don't even have a twin, and I still argue with myself over what we're gonna play. I rarely even talk to myself anymore, much less answer. :D
