"attitude", that is.
It's been said here more than a few times - if you want to be out there playing, you've got to get out there and network, talk/listen to other bands, etc.
I see the same profiles here on Bandmix that are updated on a regular basis - meaning these folks 'want' to join up with others.
I've been sending messages to BM players in the local area about my new Open Mics, with a couple of sentences mentioning that even if they are not solo players, this is a good way to network with other musicians and maybe a chance to meet that missing band member.
So I get a few positive replies, and a few negative like "stop sending me these messages. I'm not interested' from someone whose profile shows him playing an acoustic guitar - although his profile description indicates he wants to play hard rock - and "Have the gear, ability, and attitude".

So, I'm finding that Bandmix can be a pretty good place to weed out the players with the wrong initial attitude, too!

On the same vein, the guy I auditioned last week, although we had a similar song list, had a style that did not mesh wiht mine at all. Have yet to hear back from the last guy who I thought was a pretty good fit.
I've let my CL ads lapse, and thinking that auditioning guys thorugh the OMs may be my best bet at this point.

I was contacted last week by a lady in my area who's looking for a utility player to come in w little or no rehearsel and flesh out her solo and duo gigs at wineries (supposedly pretty decent money). '60's and '70's singer-songwriter stuff and originals w a loose and spontaneous approach. (right up my alley)

I shared some videos of me playing different types of music on a few different instruments and she was impressed....maybe a little TOO impressed.

she then sent me a cpl of her orig tunes (audio) w her singing and playing very rudimentary gtr.

and pretty weak tea it is. so, I'm gonna have to have "the conversation" w her that it's really not my cup of tea. not looking fwd to that cos she's sooooo excited about us working together and seems real nice. ah well.

If she's at 'that level' how is she able to get good paying gigs? Or maybe that's a pipe dream?

No idea what you are babling about, makes no sense (again). Maybe you can have your wife translate the posts into simpler language so you can understand them.

well, in my experience....musical talent has little to do w getting gigs.

it seems like there's always been plenty of hacks out there regurgitating lame and tired versions of "Brown Eyed Girl" and "Margaritaville".....while too many talented and creative folks sit at home and play on their couch.

salesmanship, an impressive website/PR pkg, the abilty to hustle gigs, making a good impression, having a good line of $hit....there's lots of factors involved there.

True, but if you haven't got the talent/ability to back up the hype, you're not likely to be asked back!

well, there's the other reason I failed to mention as to why the hacks work regularly......

they bring out a crowd.... their friends, spuses, and extended families who spend money.

sadly, if given the choice between hiring someone playing good music who doesn't bring in a lot of folks or some hack who does ......most places will choose the latter.

at one time the argument that good music attracts and keeps a crowd might have been true, but these days???

... as apathetic and self involved as most audiences are......I don't think that's as valid as it once was.

SEE... There you go again saying something smart. One minute you are genius the next... a dummie. I am growing tired of playing with jeckell and hyde. Are you sugar sensitive?

a wiser person facing your conundrum would look inward to question THEIR perspective in the face of such inconsistencies. instead you look at me.

perhaps everything I say is smart? or perhaps everything I say paints me a dummy?

BTW...note correct spelling of "dummy".

(I only mention because you demonstrate how APPEARING a dummy is something of great concern to you)
