just finalized the fine print and booked a last minute gig for tomorrow. that makes 4 gigs this weekend (the mrs is bitching about being a music widow..so, what else is new?)

anyway...this is a memorial service for these folk's son. they had seen my bluegrass band MERE MORTALS playing out on Tuesday, got my contact info from the venue and contacted me last night.

so, I have this long running (and no doubt very tiresome) bit I always say to the wife for memorial and wedding gigs...."so, I guess leave the tip jar home?"

yeah, you know THAT never gets old for her!

our tip jar....it used to say "401K PLAN". like this "Stimulus Money" one...it'd always garner a few laughs and that's often enough to get folks reaching into their wallet.

Playing for family and or other worthy cause has it's own rewards IMO

And yes . . . we get invitations to a lot of these.
If it's local ( within about 30 miles ) and I don't have to reschedule or cancel my "day job" to participate it's cool.
Otherwise I have no compunction in asking for expenses.

My guys work hard and have families also.

I hear ya on that score, but this is a paying gig.

I'm w you on the playing the occasional freebie for a good cause or families/friends.... but I probably would have had to pass on this one if it wasn't a paid gig considering how busy the rest of the weekend is.

even though we're being paid, i still take being invited to play for someone's memorial as a compliment and an honor.

Indeed
We played a funeral service not so long ago.
It was totally cool . . . and we were given rights to an original song someone else had written for the occasion.
