I'm not sure where the custom came from. It's the yuletide tradition of hanging Mistletoe. From what certain carolers seem to have revealed, it is part of a holiday-prayer. It is hung in a hope to prevent thermonuclear-abomination. That's what we might call it today! We would love to not live under the threat of nuclear-extinction!
