bass players with serious time issues

so what's w bass players and their hinky time issues???

i played a gig this past tues w Mere Mortals (bluegrass). several bands on the card, we're first up. we spend some time w the "sound engineer" (cough, cough, ahem) getting our two condensor mics dialed in to sound passable.

two of us on each mic....gtr/vcls and fiddle/vcls on one.....banjo, and (me on) mandolin on the other. i'm plugging my dobro (w an old surface mount DeArmond pickup) into my ROLAND 60 and have a 57 on the amp.

we're waiting on our bassplayer who never does shows up. no show, no call. so, i end up borrowing an electric bass from the gal who's playing in the next band.

not wanting to screw w her 4x10 cab and 600 watt SWR head i opted to plug into my cube...it worked out fine. anyway. mike the bassplayer never shows and i never do get to play mando or dobro for our two hr set.

we're worried about him cos it's not like him to not show and not call. what happened? we learn that he was confused w the days. no, he didn't think the gig fell on a different day.....he explained that he thought tuesday was in fact MONDAY and that our gig wasn't til the next day. wow.

and last night P-JAZZ is playing a 3 pc. 5-8 winery gig. drums, bass, and me on gtr/vibes. this is the 4th time we're playing there...always the same time frame.

i get in around 45 min before the gig.....drummer is there and all set up. i'm ready to go 30 min before we're sched and now we're waiting on the bassplayer. and 5:00 comes....and he doesn't. so monte and i start playing just gtr and drums thinking he's gonna show any minute. we decide to give him a call after 45 minutes of that. "hey, bill.....is evertything ok? where are ya, man?" 'oh, i'm just three blocks away, i'll see ya in a few".

he shows around 5:50 and is surprised to see/hear us playing as he wheels his amp in. "hey, we start at six, don't we????"... "NO, LIKE EVERY OTHER TIME WE'VE PLAYED HERE...WE START AT 5:00".

as if that wasn't bad enough.....after a cpl of minutes he tells us "oh, hey....i just set us up a calendar on GOOGLE so we can all keep track of each other's gigs and availability". damn! i told him he needs to get himself a paper calendar...and check it from time to time. that's what i use and i always manage to get the days and times correct!

old school, baby. old school!

That sucks! We had a google calendar with 'Instant Karma' but could we get everyone to use it? Nope. WHat do you have to do? Call each person on the phone as often as necessary, I guess.

Don't get me started...

I got in the habit of sending a band text on the morning of a gig with the address, dress code, Load-in time, downbeat time, and hit me back to confirm. Much better results but still less than 100% effective.

We are musicians after all. No reason to screw up 1,000 yr history of being a day late and a dollar short.

ain't THAT the truth!

a photo from the gig...AFTER Bill the bass player showed up.

they take care of us w food and drinks there, otherwise you can be sure the drinks would have been on Bill.

I wonder what that xylophone would sound like thru my pedals and half stack?

ok, john...say it with me "vibraphone"....."vibraphone". 8)

kinda like confusing a piano and an organ. similar in their basic DNA but altogether different instruments.

i've messed around w distortion and ring modualation on vibes. meh. time delay stuff (chorus, phase shifter, flange, delays) work pretty good.

that old set of vibes has a great p/u system on it w a piezo under each bar. plugged in...it actually sounds like the acoustic instrument...just louder. still, there's nothing like getting to play it straight up acoustic and really take advantage of it's huge dynamic range.

I've got zero timing issues. Of any kind.

Bass players usually aren't a problem. Drummers, on the other hand ....

Mike Talbot and Chris Sherlock - magic match on bass and drums.

FBob - while I agree that timing is vital, I believe there to be another element that cements the deal. That is a nebulous thing I call, for lack of a better term, 'feeling.'

I don't mean just being soulful - my cat is soulful! Everyone or at least, every musician, has a 'feel' for how they want their music to come out. (Obviously I'm not talking covers). With Chris - I could play virtually anything and he'd be on it like we'd rehearsed for months.

Happy Thanksgiving

Talbot
