size matters....sometimes, sometimes not

in light of recent conversations here about size of equipment i thought i'd share this....

i played a small restaurant Brooklyn Pizza in Fulton MO last night w MERE MORTALS bluegrass band.

5 pc. band w gtr/vcls, fiddle/vcls, banjo, bass, me on dobro/mando.

the room is too small for a PA and too big/loud for acoustic... also setup space constraints.

so, i brought my little ROLAND Cube 60 amp and a small foot pedal sized passive DOD 4 ch mixer cos there's only one input on the Cube.

i put up two mics for vcls, and used the other two channels for my mando and dobro. (loud ass fiddler....and louder assed banjo player)

absolutely perfect rig for da gig! got several compliments on it from the staff and a few musicians who were present.

damn...wish i could use a rig that small (and cheap) for all gigs!

I've got one of those passive 4-input mixers, too. Surprised the set up worked for mics plus your 2 (a/e?) instruments - all need decent preamps.
I'd have probably used a mixer like my Mackie ProFX12 so that each mic/instrument had a little more control, plus the amp of course.

nah, don't believe that propaganda, mike. that's the same urban myth that says you MUST use a DI before ya can plug an instrument into a board.

will it sound better WITH a preamp....likely so. is it necessary? nah.

"a/e instruments"? yes. the mando has a cpl of passive piezos under the soundboard by the f holes, and i have an old DeArmond top mount magnetic pickup on my dobro.

Yea we got a gig this weekend in a somewhat small room, so Ive been debating, do I just plug a preamp in the PA, do I take my little 20 watter, or take the 150 half stack??????

Decisions decisions, Im sure i will take the half stack!

Of course Planet I play an entirely different style than you guys do, so it just goes with the territory.

The people that come see my band, dont want a band that sounds good they want a band that looks good! LOL!

I joke about this stuff all the time, but over the past few years we do get lots of compliments about our musicianship, showmanship and our volume levels. With the big equipment we use, man you can get it so clean it blows me away.

No, don't kid yourself, all of them need preamps, but you had them all ganged up on the Roland Cube preamp. You don't need a DI if the mixer you are running to has a preamp, but a DI will take an unbalanced signal (like the typical TS guitar cable) and make it balanced so you can run the signal 50/100/however many feet back to the mixer with no loss of signal. Try running a 50 foot guitar cable (there's a reason you won't find them in the store) and see what happens to your sound.

yeah, there's a pre amp stage and power stage in the amp. (as in all amps). but i often run the mando w no DI....and no preamp right into a board. works perfectly well.

now, will it sound better WITH a preamp (like the PARA Acoustic DI i sometimes use)? sure...and you have a lot more control over your tone as well.

i'm just saying you don't NEED to use a DI or pre.

i've had to do the same w a bass at times. no DI, no preamp.....one end of the cable into the bass-the other end into the PA. no muss. no fuss.

last time i did that P -Jazz was playing a club and my amp was DOA. i plugged directly into our CARVIN head which was powering a set of ancient Bose 802's.....i had several people (including two bass players) come up on break to compliment me on my tone! they just about fell over when i told 'em my setup!

no preamp in that DOD mixer. strictly passive.

but a DI will take an unbalanced signal (like the typical TS guitar cable) and make it balanced so you can run the signal 50/100/however many feet back to the mixer with no loss of signal. mike, since on most of gigs i'm usually running the board from the stage i'm never more than spitting distance from it.
