so, Planet Jazz gig on Saturday in a small winery. cool old bldg from the 1860's w high tin ceilings and old plank floor. the floor has about two or three small perfectly round holes about the the size of a silver dollar where we're set up.
as i finish setting up i reach in my pocket to take my keys out. i have about 8 different picks in the same pocket. all these picks are real thick 2.5 to 3.0...most of 'em go for a buck or so. maybe two or three bucks. i do have my fave pick as well. a $12 John Pearse Fast Turtle. i love these picks!
anyway, as i pull my keys out, one of the picks comes out w it and falls right down the hole......i don't even have to look, i already know damn well which pick it is. i check my remaining picks. sure enough, all there EXCEPT the $12 Pearse. of course.
now, this frigging hole is maybe 1 3/4" across. what are the frigging odds of ANY pick falling down it from a height of 4 feet. and then, why THIS pick!
i bet if i stood over the hole and TRIED to drop a pick thru it from that height i couldn't do it!

50-50 - either it falls thorugh, or doesn't!

I assume the holes just didn't go through to the basement below?

mike, that's like saying dropping a coin and it landing on it's side is 50-50...either it does or doesn't!

Us rock stars use the cheapest picks we can get our hands on.
I use .88 Tortex, the green ones. When I was playing a lot, some of my friends that played would call me, did you play such and such place last weekend, I said yea, they said I thought so, when I set up this weekend those damn green picks were everywhere!
$12 would get quite a few of my green meanies!

well, us BLUEGRASS and JAZZ stars would like to use cheaper picks, but usually need to spend a little more to get a pick with less give than an overcooked piece of penne!
different plectrums for different rectums!

I dropped a bottle of beer one night and it landed standing up, one drop splashed out...not a chance in hell I could ever do it intentionally...
I use the green Tortex for electric, and the yellow ones too, thinner orange and red ones for acoustic. 4 for a buck last time I bought any...probably twice that much now...
They last forever, I have some that are over 20 years old...never had a Fender pick that lasted more than 2 weeks...usually more like 2 hours...when I was a kid that's all I could find, got aggravated and started cutting my own picks out of plastic Clorox jugs or milk jugs..

Hell Planetguy why not just whittle down a quarter if you dont want any flex! LOL!
Im just gonna stick to my green meanies!
Actually have a Halloween gig with my old band Aint Yo Mama this weekend, we are flying in our bassist after the bar owner offered enough money to get him here, Man I should have thought of doing that a couple of years ago, well yea I can make it happen, but it will cost you around $1200 for everyones travel expenses!

LOL, JW!
or make like chris squier....and USE a quarter.
i got into using heavier picks a while back. i honestly have no idea how anyone can play w the flex of thinner picks (under 1.5). i know a lot of people do...and sound great, i just could never do it myself!
a few yrs ago when i started getting into gypsy jazz....well, all those guys use picks from 3.0 to as much as 7.0!!!! 7.0 ...man that's like playing w a 2x4!!!!
this guy i used to play with was the "la pompe" (the pump) rhythm gtrst and he used a 5.0 Wegen ($20 pick). man-o....he was stoooooopid loud. he showed up at one gig w a 7.0 Wegen ...we made him put it back in his pocket because it was so loud!
3.0 is as thick as i go. the thickness feels real comfy (what she said).....i like it on electric for feel and tone, and on it acoustic instruments it really does get the strings moving and gives up the goods in the volume dept.

For the price it might be worth it to make them at home.
