I've been looking for a steel guitar player for a long time, since back when I lived in Tennessee.

Now when I set the search to look for only steel guitarists, guess what? Everybody and their little brother Billy plays steel guitar. It's like people think, "Ugh, my strings are steel I think, I guess I play steel guitar"

There was a craze for a while to call acoustics steel guitars "Why?".

I'll go to ask people about it when they say they play it, and they don't have a clue.

FOLKS THESE ARE STEEL GUITARS.

For the kids out there, 90% of the music on Spongebob uses a steel guitar.

Don't get me started on upright basses. Every bass player from Californy to Maine plays upright bass, but they never have one. WHY MUST YOU PEOPLE TAUNT ME!!!!

Yeah, and every singer is a bass and a tenor at the same time.

The Rickenbacker there is a "Frying Pan" for sure! Since they are made out of cast aluminum, calling it a "steel guitar" probably confuses people even more.

The Steel Guitar gets it's name from the steel bar used to play it. There is a rumor that Steely Dan's steel guitarist Jeff Baxter's chromed steel slide bar brought to mind, for Becker and Fagen, certain somewhat similar chromed objects named Steely Dan ( I, II and III ) from William Burroughs' novel, "Naked Lunch" inspiring the band's name. That has nothing to do with the name "lap steel" though, so far as I know.

So far this thread has been lacking a Bigsby!

Steel guitar? Maybe it should be steal guitar.

The music comes out bitter on a stolen guitar.

Got to be specific! A "steel guitar" is any guitar played with a steel slide.

Then you've got lap steels, pedal steels ..... and varieties of those, too - the all-metal, the dobro (not mountain dobro0 also called a resonator ...

I think the Dobro is exactly what he's after.

I always enjoyed working with steel guitar players. I've worked with pedal steel, lap steel and Dobro. However, I don't consider Dobro steel exclusively.
David Kampmann from Soundclick played on a recording of mine using a Dobro (Loved what he did)

But David often finger picks rag time on a Dobro. David is one bad picker, in my book. I have liked everything I have heard him play. Check out some of his rag time. David started out in rock & roll but wandered into acoustic. This guy is GOOD.

Try it you'll like it. :)

Sure I know what a steel guitar is...it's that absolutely horrid sounding thing used in country music that makes my skin crawl...

Here's my lap steel, before I fixed it up and made it playable. The couple of remaining strings were probably at least 40 years old.

Electromuse made these from 1945 to 1947. A friend in north Louisiana gave me this one from her collection of antiques. It sounds loads better than anything I've ever heard in a country tune...It originally had the original cloth covered guitar cable, which is built in and soldered onto the volume control, but it got yanked off the guitar stand by someone else and I had to replace it with a newer one. He walked by and hung it with his foot...I wanted to scream...had to replace the cable and the capacitor inside before it would play again.

.... or steal guitars ?

Most people who wear "cowboy" hats have no idea about horses or cows and will never own or ride either. It's all "playtime" and the infantile mind at work coupled with whatever type of conditionalism the mind in question has somehow "retained". In short it is a tragic joke and embarrassment to mankind.

I am not surprised you have such difficulty ... good luck to you.

I told my ex I wanted to settle on a ranch out west, buy a few head of cattle etc. She laughed. "They'd be your pets in two days and we'd go broke."

Yeah...but I do have some nice boots.

And -because it is a steel guitar thread - I recently received a gift from my brother which is a Dobro made by Dean. Got it spruced up and tuned to E but I don't play it much since I don't understand it. At first I thought - well, a slide guitar! But no...

Hmm...well everyone in Texas knows what it is.

While checking in at the airport in Berlin a week ago, I was behind a German man who checked a guitar in a soft shell case into the luggage bin.

I was quite shocked and when I saw him in the waiting area, I asked what he was thinking!??!

Turns out it was a lap steel and this guy, Cristoph Hahn, plays "lead" for a band called the Swans. It was surprising to find a German that played steel guitar!

Cool guy...anyone heard of them?

The only cowboys you'll find in Texas these days have stars on the side of their helmets.

Weird, ok I was bored and checked them out on YouTube.

Wow..It's a little long and drawn out but certainly not as bad as MC Yo Yo Wassup. Actually it was kind of thought provoking and I applaud that aspect for sure.
