Jimmy Page, Since Ive Been Lovin You, The Heartbreaker Solo, and the lead break in Whole Lotta Love.

For some reason the other day I was sitting around the house and found Frampton Comes Alive and put it on. I had Do You Feel Like We Do cranked, and man that dude had the greatest les paul marshall, and probably a fuzz pedal tone on guitar. I know that song is a joke to many, but man its really a guitar masterpiece to my ears. Any guitarist on here go back and listen thru it one time, with no distractions and tell me it aint a hell of a piece of music. Plus the way the song ebb and flows thru sections, really really good in my opinion.

But thinking real hard, in my world, the tour de force guitar solo is still, Eruption, I love a lot of other guitar players, but that little 1:50 solo is just bad ass. I love Satch and Vai mind you, but Eruption did more for shred guitar than anything before or since.

So my top 3

1. Eruption
2. Page, Whole Lotta Love Break
3. Schon, the solo to Lights, love that one

But then my choices change weekly, you know how fickly us damn musicians are!

This first one is from a Dream Theater epic. I chose the live version. Petrucci is one of my fall time fav guitarists, and I just love this phrasing in so many places of their songs. It's impossible for me to pick one song that is the best as far as solos go, but the end solo to this song is pretty freaking cool.

The other piece is a solo on a by a band called Enchant (I've mentioned them once before here - a few of you liked; they are the best "unknown" band I've ever heard). The song is called "Follow the Sun", and really - there is a lot of really great solo work throughout the whole song, so picking out the solo isn't indicative of how I feel about the song.

Doug Ott is the guitar player, and one of his favorite influences is Neal Schon from Journey (also one of my favs). Schon had this way of phrasing solos that was just perfect for whatever piece of music they were doing. I always admired Schon's solo work - probably more than any other guitar player - until I heard Ott.

Ott's work, to me, is like Schon's. Ott, like Schon, can clearly shred with the best of them. He has all the technique like Petrucci and Morse, but he has this Neal Schon-like way of phrasing solos that just blows my mind. The intro solo to this song gets me every time, and just everything Ott does in this song makes me smile.

I love Enchant's work, largely because of Ott. They have released 7 albums, and I think the only weak work was the last album they did. The other 6 are amazing. It makes me sad to think so few people know of this band.

The Lights solo is great. I love Schon's work so much. He's in my top 3 favorites... I love so much of his work over the years. The guy knows just what to do for a song. Not too much, not too little - just right.

My favorite guitar solo always has been and always will be Time (David Gilmore)

The way the solo in Stairway to Heaven is crafted just seems like the all-time ultimate solo. I know people think it's "old hat" but that solo just hit ya like a bazooka the first time you heard it.

"Since We've Ended As Lovers" by Jeff Beck is one that never gets old to me.




There are so many but those 2 seem to be head and shoulders about the rest, historically speaking.


Should probably give honorable mention to Blackmore and George Harrison for their historical contribution.

YOD, yea Stairway is one of the best songs ever obviously, I didnt think about the solo, actually the part I like the best is right at the end he builds some bends in there, right before the song is over, after the vocals stop.

Stairway is a tour de force all the way around. Slap me for not mentioning it, but to me Stairway is more about the length, structure and the build up of the song over the solo, I guess thats why I didnt think of it. I was thinking more on the lines of a solo break where a guitarist really bares his soul.

From beginning to end Hotel California has been etched in my mind...
My first listen was back when I was 10 or 11... got it on 8 track. I wore that thing out. But the title song was something I never heard before... having a bit of reggae and Spanish blend to it (didn't understand that at that time). But it was part of the lure. The groove I guess.
And the back and forth between Walsh and Felder was brilliant. Yeah not the acrobats of some tastes but all of those elements fit perfectly together. A timeless song and guitar piece.

How do you pick just a couple with all the hundreds of great guitar works out there????
