The Farleys recorded four new songs last night. Still have lots to do on them but what a great start. I'm stoked!

Ha it just might John. The Farleys have infected another vulnerable young musician!!! Your new Farleys name is Jack Farley! Middle name Off!

Jumpin Jack Farley, would that work?

I kinda like that.

Last night I went home and got my recorder out and recorded my amp just like I left it from practice the other night. Man I had a tone to die for!

I shoved an SM 57 in the grill and an old condenser mic about 9 ft from the amp. Recorded them panned one left and the other right, and just got this huge tone out of it. Ive always had problems getting that kind of tone out of my big amp when I record, but I think I found it.

I recorded a demo of the song, am going to make some slight changes in the arrangement, and vocals and hopefully get it like I want it, this is one Im going to have to share on here.

Way cool John. Pete puts three mics on my amp when we record, one for each speaker and one for the back. I can't complain about my tone.

I ran the new songs through Audacity just to cleanup them up a bit and applied the Amplifier effect. It gave me almost an additional 8db on a couple of them. I'm supposed to go back this weekend and do some overdubs. I have a gig tonight with Dover Soul. No rest for the wicked.

3 mics, Ive never tryed that before, I have miced a combo back and front, but never 3.

So if your recording logic is used, I would need 4 SM 57s for the speaker cab, and then a distant mic out front.

One time I did try this thing that I read that Bowie did during his Munich Sessions. They would have 3 mics at different distances where he sang and gate them to open at different times, I tryed this on guitar and after some tweaking of the gates it was actually pretty cool, but it just took so long to get everything set up, and when Im in the mood I just want to lay it down.

I like the tone I captured with the two mics, so I wil probably stick with that setup.

The reason Pete uses three mics is because my Marshall TSL has two different Celestion speakers, one is a greenback and the other a Heritage. Supposedly the engineers liked the sound of each speaker and couldn't decide which to go with, so they just put in one of each. The mic in the back catches different waves than the front mics. All together it should be more like what the amp actually sounds like.

That makes sense, whatever u guys are doing from what Ive heard it works.

In the end I dont guess it matters as long as you like it, but as a guitarist I love the tone on the last Farleys material you did, sounded real thick to me.

We went back in the studio last night and rerecorded three of the new originals and a cover of "Politician" by Cream. Much happier with these tracks, last week's were good but needed some tightening. Overdubs Sunday, final vocals next Wednesday.

When using multiple mics on a source be careful of phase issues. teh 3-to-1 rule works for front mics, but a mic on the rear of a cabinet might need to have its phase inverted when mixing (that's what good recording engineers are for - figuring out all that stuff!)
I saw a short video of Carbon Leaf's lead guitarist setting up to record a new track the other day - he had 3 different cabinets hooked up, each with 2 mics on it!

I did some more recording, Im still sticking the SM 57 into the grill and then the condensor 9-12 ft back then pan them left and right, sounds pretty good to my ears.

Im still working on my song, have rerecorded it about 6 times now, in the past I just get into a hurry, but this time Ive decided to really tighten it all up, and not quit on it til Ive got it like I want it, plus Im going to try and take it to my ole drummer friend and let him put live drums on it. He inspired me with the lyrics.

If it flys, floats, or f**k, just rent it!
Another fuggen note aint worth a sh*t.

Ive managed to put f**k, fuggen and sh*t in one chorus, not too bad not to bad.

Honestly the tune is coming together real well, I have to make sure and poist it here when I get done.

Hell Jimmy you and the Farleys may want to cover this one, from the redneck Farley! I think it would really fit what you guys do.

I got a recording of the arrangement and all you guys that always get on to me for playing covers. MY new group is playing the 24th and we are going to play this song live, so maybe I am headed in more of an original direction.

I'm going to go out on a line here and say...after it's mixed (doh)!

But seriously, I'll post something next week once we finish overdubs and vocals. Or are you talking to Johnny lol?
