A couple of five year olds...

I was observing a couple of cute five year olds at the pond I regularly fish. They were having a great time, exploring the shoreline looking for turtles, frogs, laughing and having a great time. They came over to me and asked me how to fish. I showed them what I could, and being of that age when patience wears thin, they ran off to explore something else. Their parents were nowhere to be seen, but being in a crowded park I assumed they were nearby, perhaps even in sight. So I kept fishing, paid them no heed. They ran to where some other kids were kicking a ball around and joined the fun. I thought, what a wonderful thing, to have all that energy and curiosity, without a care in the world, one white kid, and one black, and then I thought of the recent past events, and thought to myself, "what the hell happened to us?"

Unusual these days to not have parents hovering in sight. Parents around here don't even let their kids wait for the school bus without supervision.
