I'm a big fan of poetry (got 43 notebooks of my own stuff to prove it).
I have liked -at one time or another... henry rollins, jack keruac, coleridge, longfellow, ginsberg, frost, thomas, and tons more.
Recently, I started reading some bukowski and I'm blown away. I can't get enough of his work. He's really become my favorite. Just like with music, it's always good to expand on your horizons so...
what poets have you read... what poems have inspired you?

William Burroughs, T.S. Eliot, E.E. Cummings, Jim Morrison.

That's a nice list... how could I forget all those great writers?

Oh, yeah, and rudyard kipling(spelling). I'll never get that one poem outta my head but it's a wise poem...

some coleridge I can't forget:

Plenty of morrison that I will always remember too...

shel silverstein: all things from "where the sidewalk ends"

so many others, but they are my favorites

what famous pop/rock tune did shel silverstein write? I can't recall it but it's on the tip of my tongue. I know he did a bunch of Dr. Hook stuff...

he wrote and recorded "a boy named sue," but that's certainly not pop/rock and most folks remember johnny cash's cover of the tune...ah yes, dr. hook: "cover of rolling stone"

not certain whom else recorded his tunes...

have you heard shel's follow-up to that tune? can't remember the name off the top off my head but it's told from the father's point of view and takes on a whole different meaning as to why he named his son sue...

no, I haven't heard... who performed it? I'd def like to check it out.

found it...it's called "father of a boy named sue" and it's on the "songs and stories" lp, 1978

could be an interesting topic: artists and their follow-up tunes to other hit records. couple that come to mind are: status quo with "bye bye johnny" and what was the one that followed bowie's "ground control to major tom?"

hmm, I'll def look that up when I get home...
interesting idea for a topic but I'm afaid I wouldn't be much help on that one.

Yeah, bob would top my list of songwriters...

I know most 'poet scholars' would say that the use of the typical "rhym at the end of every other sentence" structure makes most modern songwriters 'less than parr' comparitively to other poets.

It's not really my opinion... but in college I took a lot of english coursework (believe it or not) and specifically poetry courses - I would often opt to read song lyrics and choose songwriters to read from for various assignments.
It's an interesting issue - to me - that many 'poet elitists' among my classmates would scoff at the idea of choosing a songwriters words to demonstrate what one thinks is good poetry... and believe it or not even bob dylans material got attacked(when I read it) for being simplistic.

I'm of the mindset that a poems merit is a combination of meter, word choice, and most importantly - imagery. I def see some things when I listen to "up to me".

I have to say Jim Morrison without a doubt and of course one of the most underated poets ever. Matter of fact a very underated singer as well.
