I always have wondered if Pennsylvania is indeed as beautiful as the film "Deer Hunter" suggests while DeNiro and his buddies are out deer hunting?..is Pennsylvania really that mountainous looking? or was that part in the movie with the steep looking mountains shot out west, and is not actually the way Pennsylvania appears to be?..

after looking into this, I find the deer hunting "mountain scenes" were indeed filmed in the State of Washington rather than Pennsylvania.. that bugs me thinking the film director would have allowed that.. watching the deer hunting scenes had me thinking that is much too rugged looking for it to be Pennsylvania..

The mountains aren't as steep and tall as the Rockies, but there are hilly areas!

I live in Houston flat land for sure! An overpass on the expressway is a MOUNTAIN to me LOL! I'll never forget the first time I saw the Texas Hill Country. I was like look at the mountains! LOL! I don't blame you folks for staying there even if it is hard to find work!

The mountainous areas of PA are beautiful. I've done a lot of backpacking on many of the trails up there in potter county. The drive to state college is also amazing. I think the elevation tops off around 4500ft on some of the bigger mountains, not quite your colorado rockies, but not small by any measure.
This is one of the last bastions of what PA once was. I still camp up there (real camping / backpacking, not wussy camping), but they've been dramatically increasing the fracking leases on state and federal lands, so the water tables are being polluted, so that's going to end fast.
You see, when you are doing a 60+ mile trail, or even the 25's, you need fresh water along the way..

Someone does not understand fracking nor apparently, basic geology.

Yes it's addictive, I've been collecting since I was a kid, I have boxes of them. Since I live in Michigan most are Devonian (350 MYA) corals and trilobites. When I go on vacation I'm the oddball looking at rocks. I'm going to Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic next week, hoping to find some specimens.
