How do you keep order and keep things moving forward in the studio, when you have smartasses who give you friction, and are certain they could operate things just as well as you?

Engineering and Producing are both - not as hard as you think, And, harder than you think.

I'm not trying to play 'Boss', and I try to make them feel comfortable and suggest things in nice ways. I ask things in nice ways. I still get static.

It's really only 2 guys that are the problem, but I'm getting more and more ready to punch them.

Sounds as though you have production issues GT.
Who is paying for it?
Who is the principle writer of the the material with ideas of what the creative end should be?
How talented are the participating members?
Are they valuable to you or are the replaceable?

Even the best band cannot be a true democracy. One person needs to be in charge - and it doesn't have to be the same person for each song, nor even a band member (that's what the 'producer' is for).

Every band has a process to get the best out of their players. Sometimes you just have to all piss in your corners and figure it out. This can be one of the most stressful things when in the studio. Whomever is paying for it should have some say. Typically the other players feel their reputation is on the line and if you are NOT paying them then they should have a say as well. I don't know if you have ever seen the way Aerosmith goes thru their process but it REALLY takes a lot of patient from everyone and punching or intimidating the other players is the VERY WORST thing you can do for the process and end result! If you have decided to play with these guys then you must except the baggage that comes along with them. We all have our own problems and IMO the bands that learn to deal with one another in a civilized way are the ones that achieve the most. Darn that sounds like good advice! Now if I can just listen to my own advice!
