well, the "new lineup" of Planet Jazz played our first gig together at this little restaurant last night. the owner, staff, diners, and us dug it so we're gonna try doing this on thursday's for "awhile" and see what shakes.

i'm totally stoked to have a regular gig to improve my chops (as we know, ya can woodshed at home forever, but until you can put into use on a gig....it don't mean $hit cos ya don't "own it yet")
plus, it'll be great to have a chance to tighten our stuff up and work in some new tunes.

owner and i weren't sure talking on the ph that there'd be enough room for the vibes tho he really wanted 'em. i went by day before and saw the up front area by the window and knew we could make it work.

of course, that means i now have to schlep 'em....but i'm not complaining.

oh, and they have some killer eats and most happening IPA on tap ....Piney River???

it was a total blast grabbing a table after the last tune and sitting down to partake and shoot the $hit w great buddies basking in the afterglow of fun gig. really...one of those "life's good!" moments we all savor.


ok....enough preamble.

same rap as last time. the wife (yes glen, i HAVE a wife and i am not a homosexual....NOT that there's anythin' wrong with that...hehe)
shot some vid on her iPhone. it's a pretty loud room w nothing but hard reflecting surfaces everywhere. and there were some particularly loud folks behind her table who were enjoying themselves. and the folks at her table are also yakking away.

yes, of course the bass could be louder...yes, the vcls need more def....blah, blah, blah.

it am whut it am.

"Blue Monk"... kinda funny. i never play this on gtr before and i was feeling all cocky when i called this one.....we started and i totally blanked on how the melody goes! i did recover fairly quickly though! that stuff always cracks me up.

i asked my wife why she pulled the plug shooting that one right after my solo knowing it had nothing to do w the fact that she wanted to cut off the bass solo (the mrs. DO like her bass)....she said it was so stinking loud around her she figured might as well just kill this one cos' it'll be useless)


"Here Without You" is one of my tunes. 1st time the drummer ever heard it. have i mentioned how lucky i feel playing w that guy????

Very Cool... One thing about Jazz...I wouldnt be able to tesll you missed the melody, unless I was intimately familiar with the piece, and understanding of Jazz...
To me you guys were smooth sailing all the way through... I guess I'm dum that way... But Hey... I enjoyed whut I heard

Very nice. I like Here Without You a little better than Blue Monk. I couldn't really hear the bass player very well, and the drummer is just OK. They both seem to be a little below you on the talent meter. But I have to ask: what did you pick up for JCP at the Religious Gift Shop across the street?

thanks. well, the bass player wasn't really "on" last night and neither of them are really well represented on these vids.

i'm embarrassed to say i neglected to get him anything.

i hear exactly what you're saying.
but that's the thing about jazz, maybe more so than any other music....it's all about how someone interprets a piece of music. playing it different than the way others do, or the way YOU did last night is not only appreciated..it's expected!

as for you not catching my gaffe....no sweat, i don't think the guys i was PLAYING WITH noticed it either. my skill at covering my ass when i need to is one i've been developing over many a year!

hey, isn't that the mark of any musician worthy of their salt....the abilty to cover their hiney when needed????

Great musicians can not only cover their mistakes, they can make you believe they intended to do that! Again, good job.

Indeed it is... Like that Time I did a cover of the Star Spangled Banner at a ball game... I hosed it so bad that I had to make it look like Rosanne Barr did that gig... It really takes some skill to engineer feux pas recoveries like that...

I do not like the acoustics in there for whatever you are using to record.

scott...the acoustics in that room are absolutely DREADFUL. however, they are not QUITE as bad as the recording would lead you to believe (thank god).

Thanks for posting Planet. I liked the vibes tune the best. Agree that the room is acoustically challenging. These are the gigs that make a musician. A noisy room with people yapping away while you play.

Our gig last weekend was at a community center and had all the lighting and ambiance of a Jr High lunch cafeteria. No matter. We do what we do and it works or... not. It was still better than the goat ranch we played for Halloween.

Actually that's a great idea for the intro/background of a new tune.
