... bought another guitar, that is. Taylor 310CE, solid spruce top, solid sapelle back and sides. I've been jonesing for a Taylor for some time, love their sound, especially plugged in.
Now I've got to figure out how to tell the wife ... at least I used Paypal money that I got from selling other stuff.

A pro once told me, the difference between Martin and Taylor guitars- Martins are made on the east coast and Taylors on the west. The Taylor guitars, therefore come from a typically warmer climate, and should be treated different with humidifiers and such.

Just sharing that.. I don't know much more, but it's worth googling and looking into. High end acoustics are really touchy to temp and humidity changes.

I know that Taylors come with a DVD about caring for them, humidity and stuff. Plenty of people around here use them ...

I've got these Planet Waves humidifiers for my other acoustics, dont' know if they really do anything: http://www.guitarcenter.com/Planet-Wave ... 1133572.gc

I don't know if this one that fits over the whole soundhole works any better? http://www.guitarcenter.com/Kyser-Lifeg ... 1134469.gc

Then there are various other devices like: http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/HumidipakKit/
http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/dampitlrg/

Anyone have any other guitar humdiifier recommendations?

If I don't like the Taylor, it'll go back on the auction block, as I see them going for $100 or more higher than what I paid.

Gentleman in a gun shop once told me that it was easier to beg forgiveness and receive it that to ask permission.

Then I purchased a new rifle ( or was it a handgun )

Congratulations on you acquisition.

There is even more to this... The temps and humidity on the east coast might be warmer/higher actually than on the west coast during certain parts of a season. The pacific ocean is way colder than people realize. That said, Martin wood has a tendancy to dry out when it gets cooler. (Same for Taylor) I learned this recently. My guitar strings were sounding muted, complete loss of resonance. I was told to make a soap dish with holes, put a wet sponge in it and lock the guitar up in a case with it for about 8 weeks... Amazingly it did the trick. STill need work on the neck though.

Grant - I just read about the soap holder (use a plastic travel case) thing yesterday! Actually good to use one in all your guitar cases, even electrics. Heading to the dollar store this weekend! It's not the cool northeast weather that is the real culprit, it is the house heat that is on for 5-6 months making the air even drier.

Sans - I like your method! After the intiial outrage it got real quiet in the house for the rest of the night - the silence was deafening. Funny, my wife talked to her mother last night and had to to tell her, and my MIL's first questions was 'whose money was it?' :)

Mike I dont think Ive ever asked permission to buy any musical instruments.

Its funny cause I happened to get a couple of guitars out of cases recently, I got into this kick of resetting the necks, but I pulled a couple out that she thought were new, I said No I think I bought this one in 92 or 93, and this other one was around 2000.

But my new wife is pretty cool, I get these music catalogs from all the mail order deals and always look at the guitars, and a couple of times have mentioned I would love one of those, and she would say just get it.

Yesterday I got an AMS catalog, and man I really want that Alex Lifeson Axxess LP, but its around $3300, dont think I can do that, I have wanted a LP with a whammy forever.

I got the AMS catalog day before yesterday. Last night I had it on the table during dinner, opened to the Taylor page, said 'aren't these beautiful guitars?...'

My wife said the same thing about my Tele the first time she saw it - "Did you just buy that?" I bought it new in 1972, when she was 2 years old!! But then when she saw the Fender acoustic, I just said 'no, I've had this for a long time...'

Even though in our household we consider all moneys God's and we only share in it.
( yes it's difficult at times when I was the one or she, that worked for it )
I still think I may be in love with your MIL.

I would agree with you about the 'shared money', but wife doesn't see it that way. As soon as she got the new job, she blew her last unemployment check on all sorts of stuff, knowing she's be gettng a real paycheck - meantime I had been paying all the bills, got her on my work insurance for another $50 a week deducted from my pay, and not buying anything more for myself than guitar strings for the 6-1/2 months she was collecting and looking for a job.
All the money I used was from the sale of stuff, including the band gear I sold recently, old books, old Circus and Rolling Stone magazines, etc.

Forgot to mention - I just paid $400 for new tires for her car, too.

Funny how spouses see something that they have not seen in a while and ask "Did you just" or "Is that something new" LOL
I have to go through my gun safe on occasion while my wife is home so she will recognize the parts of my "collection" and not go all frugal on me.

I have to admit, I've been guilty of that too when I see a pair of her shoes or a dress that's been in the closet for a year.
