So what's the flip flop in that? Is it that he didn't know that he was gay until recently, or that he decided to come out of the closet recently. If it was the latter it was a flip flop based on community perceptive.

The flip-flopping is due to the fact that he was one of Congress' most ardent anti-gay marriage advocates. He has been staunchly against it and wrote many bills to define marriage as the bonding of one man and one woman. Now he finds out his son is gay and suddenly he's a supporter of gay marriage. I applaud him for supporting his son but I criticize him for blindly toeing the party line and only changing when it affected him personally.
