I went to the symphony last night, Stravinsky's "Rite of Spring" was the main event. This work caused a riot when it premiered in Paris in 1913. No one had ever heard anything like it, and after seeing it performed live last night I can understand that now. This music was truly groundbreaking; strange rhythms, weird dissonance and off-kilter harmonies made a very disturbing listening experience. You might have seen an excerpt of it in the movie "Fantasia" (the dinosaur scene). The music is violent and strange, and I'm sure it upset the blue bloods who supported the arts back then.
