#7 = If you win, we basically will give you a prize and we OWN your song, you get no rights to any royalties or compensation whatsoever, ever, period.

What a "screw you" policy!

That's exactly why song competitions are for suckers and babies who think there is a short cut to the top.

Guess again.

Hey... didn't expect any replies on this thread. But interesting the responses so far.

"Read The Small Print" (very carefully) seems to be the consensus.

Still, I'd probably have entered just for the fun of it, (if I had a finished tune I thought was suitable)... not because I'm a sucker or a silly kid with stars in his eyes mind you... more like a "been round-the-block" too many times to count, been "screwed" enough times for it not to make much of a difference anymore, grumpy old 54 year old...

I'm on the left btw

But seriously tho... good points all... "buyer beware!!!"... Image... always sound advice.

What the heck. I just checked and it's not like I am raking in millions of royalties on my other songs so nothing to lose really. If one song becomes a hit and others notice, it's a foot in the door. A good investment in time for an aspiring songwriter I'd say. Probably a better deal than most major recording contracts.

Chit I thought about entering... it's not like I'm holding on to some gold gems. Readying for some platnum release! :P
And I could use the software if I won.
Maybe not my best song... just something I think is good. That I wouldn't embarrass myself with. Anyway it's just a song. You'll make more. Aint getting any younger. :?

Imagine a digital and internet version of the John Fogerty story, where he wasn't even allowed to cover the music he wrote because he didn't own it.

ANY contest that wants you to sign over ownership of your work is going to screw the bejesus out of you. They don't even have to put your name on the finished product. In all likelyhood, they would sell it to justin beeber and HE would get all the fame and credits / ownership rights. You would still be an unknown, poor, dimeless bastard hanging out at the local bar telling tall tales about how you really wrote that song, and nobody would believe you. You would start to carry proof that you won a contest with it, making you seem only more pathetic and clinging to the one that got away.

Not a pretty picture, is it?

There's NOTHING good that can come out of this contest, except maybe the prizes, if those are in all actuality what they say they are...

The say you win pro tools.. how do you know it's not a 30-day TRIAL ? F them.

Someone had posted this before (either here or the homerecording forum), which is why I knew about the rights thing. Note the song has to be under 4 minutes long - more often than not I find my songs exceeding that, I don't pay attention to the length until I'm at the mix-down stage.

I've got plenty of throw-away songs, but don't you guess they get a couple of hundred (or thousand) entries?

Yup!
Avid sent these e-mails out weeks ago i would imagine to tens of thousands of registered users. Still probably a lot of people just ignore it or think it's a scam or are just down on contests. (They're all rigged) :P
It's just a roll of the dice!
