Does anyone else here think it's possible that John Williams is slightly overrated? I'm curious to see what folks think about this man who has etched himself into legend over the past fifty years or so.

You know Star Wars, Superman, E.T., Hook, Jurassic Park, Harry Potter, Indiana Jones, Shindler's List? He did the songs for those movies. His motifs are among the most widely recognized in the world, as far as movie music goes.

I was first a huge star wars fan.. LOVED the music. JW's stuff immediately after that was much like the star wars stuff, really edgy and awesome. Later on his more original work (like the harry potter crap) was kinda "meh", if not crappy.
But then later in life I became a Tchaikovsky fan and recognized that MUCH of JW's work was strongly based on the Tchai's stuff. I still think that YES, JW earned his accolades, but much of his stuff that isn't screaming tchaikovsky really isn't his best stuff either.
I'm mixed, but I do think JW is brilliant nonetheless. Just less brilliant that I once thought him to be.

I think his music transformed the movie experience at least in Star Wars and Raiders. I missed the Harry Potter series so no comment there. A great feature film composer. I haven't seen any graffiti stating "John Williams is God" So I am unaware of any over-ratings.
