That's crazy, but when I see 'read more at Fox News' as the link below it, I wonder how 'stretched' the 'truth' is on this story.

So it's silent but deadly?

Actually, Mike... I'm inclined to suspect the source also... But regardless of how they spin the story, if in fact a kid got in "trouble" simply because she disagreed with the sentiment of foreign national declaration/pledge/religious edict or whatever, ... I would say that's a bit of a problem.

The story in the link is convoluted and distilled with only some of the facts, in order to lead you to an obvious conclusion.

The girl, who is the daughter of a mexican immigrant, took a spanish class. Part of the curriculum of that class was that the students needed to learn to recite those things. She opted out and was given an alternative assignment, to do a report on the independence of mexico, which she failed. She claims the failing grade was punishment for opting out of the other assignment.

Nowhere did she complain to the principal, or vice principal, or to the district about the questionable content of the original assignment, or point out that a single teacher's curriculum kinda sorta violated a policy based on a similar policy regarding the amercian version.

I'll be the first to admit the decision of the teacher to use that original assignment was probably not wise, and even foolish to not consider the implications, or perhaps the teacher was completely ignorant of the district rules regarding the amercian anthem.. who knows? It doesn't really matter, ignorance isn't an excuse, but for the principle or district to not know about it would only prove that nobody ever told them about it. Since the article, and the fox news article never bring up those very important pieces of info, it's probably safe to say those details were omitted for a reason.. that the story would be far less spectacular or even controversial.

Now back to the girl. I would bet a room full of puppies that she knows how to speak spanish.. having a mother immigrant FROM mexico. I'd also bet strongly that she took that class for an "easy A", and probably refused teh assignment out of sheer teen angst or self-loathing. Who knows. But it's laughable to think she was seriously offended by it, and even more laughable that she failed a simple assignment to write a report, did she just think she would skate by, by knowing spanish alone?

I took 3 years of german in HS. We had to learn their national anthem.. and we had to learn the basic history and some social studies on the country. It wasn't controversial then, and there's no reason for it to be now.

Again, the wonderful fox news team failed to find out the details that would truly shed light on all of this- and I'd bet another room full of kittens that whatever details they omitted were undoubtedly details that would have made this story nothing more than "Teen hates teacher and school, hires lawyer and makes a big stink"

Pretty reasonable assessment, Kramer...
There was a case in CA, where on Cinco De Mayo day, there were two gringos who wore their American Flag shirts and were suspended for it.. while on that day, there were other kids, waving Mexico flags.. freely. I think ever since that case, the Biased newsteams , who report on these issues are looking for scapegoats, etc. The media has really gone down the toilet, with everything else in America...
