for that price range, the Zoom H4n is the one I would get. It does what you want - and it has tracks if you want to do some 4 track recording - Audio I understand is top notch for live situations as well.

Micro recorders are great! A mini studio in your pocket. Take a moment and visualize exactly how you want to use it and what you want it to do. As a mini multitrack the Zoom H4 is hard to beat.

If all you need is a good clean live stereo recording for demos or as a scratch pad, go with the Zoom H1. I am a regular H1 user and prefer it's simplicity. I am allergic to menus and it has none. Set the levels and push the red button. Done! I use it mostly for rehearsal to see if my timing is good and transitions are smooth or to hear my vocal phrasing and diction.

Yes, they are tools.
And they work surprisingly well.
As long as your not attempting to drill a hole with a hammer.

another vote for the zoom as well

i'm probably the last dinosaur walking the earth that still uses the mini disc format....but my little SONY MD Walkman still does a pretty good job.

i have been seriously thinking about getting one these little ZOOM or TASCAM handhelds. not interested in the multitrackers.

so, is there some reason you ZOOM owners went that way instead of w TASCAM? is there an advantage to the ZOOM? they pretty much seem the same to me, no?

You got one of them hi-tech fancy mini-disc recorders?
I still just use a microcassette recorder...or a cheap boombox.

We used a Tascam DR05 to record the instruments at practice, dumped the stereo tracks into the computer, then tracked the vocals on the demos on the Instant Karma band site: http://www.instantkarmaband.net

mike, is there some reason you chose the tascam over the zoom?

I have a Tascom which is the logical upgrade from their cassette machine with four tracks.

I have found it poorly explained and a bit baffleing. But it is probably me since I'm easily baffled.

Some of you smart guys (and great musicians) save me having to write the same things over and over.
