Let's start with posting your songs here.
A ZOOM recorder is all you need, or perhaps some interface with your computer.
May even be some on line collaboration possible with the musicians here.
You will have to invest in time and money if you want to put your music into the public.
Little steps . . . lots of them.

And, spelling capitalization and punctuation might provide some indication that you are willing and able.
Concise communication is a MUST to success.

Perhaps I'm just picky.
But I'd not even consider doing a project or business with someone whom wont invest even the energy required to write a proper sentence.

You're absolutely right George. If you say you're a writer learn to write! This means all forms of communication. Why would I want to read your lyrics after reading that?

Jerry, that zoom recorder advise is a good start. Jimmy is the Dr. Sheldon Cooper of the site, he likes talking down to folks it makes him feel really big and powerful. He thinks this is "HIS" forum and everyone should bow before the great and powerful Oz! Having said that sometimes he has good advise if you can get past the badass abrasive personality.

Good luck!

Im not the best a spelling and puncuation either, but I do find it hard to read someones writting when its all run together.

If you are writting lyrics, learn to write them in poetry form so someone looking at them will know where the breaks are.

As far as recording, where there is a will there is a way, Ive shared before that you could use the recorder in a cell phone to record something, email it to yourself, then convert it to MP3 to put on this site.

If you really want to do this, then you have to find a way, noone here or anywhere else is going to give you the magic, you have to make your own.

Good Luck

So you want to be a rock 'n' roll star?
Then listen now to what I say
Just get an electric guitar
Then take some time
And learn how to play

Not kidding... get yourself a guitar and learn some chords... you're never too old. It'll be a lot easier to communicate with others if you understand music structure. Plus it's a blast. 8)
Good Luck to you.

If you have a computer or cel phone you already own a digital recorder. Figure out how to use it to record your songs so someone else might hear them.

I believe Scotty is in your area. He is a really easy-going guy who enjoys collaborating with others. :D

Hmm interesting - Capitalization and punctuation as a prerequisite for music - well yes if you are writing lyrics. But writing the notes and chord progressions? Maybe not?

That said my understanding is that music, like any profession, is more than notes, lyrics and playing well with others, although those may be the prerequisites. In the early days maybe you have to do rodie work? Also be the chief markerter, read contracts, take pictures, do sound engineering and recording and a host of other things. Then there is costuming, lighting, other advertising and ... other things of the presentation. The trick, I think, is finding the right group of people that can fill all the niches, have the capital, time and energy and the chops to make it work.

So many of these other tasks may require writing skills even if you arent a lyricist, but can they be compensated for by other members of the band or by payment to employees? At the extremes of success almost certainly, but if you are forming a new band without a pretty sure history of success based on the members what are the essentials that have to be covered by the group without help and is it fundemental that reading and writing skills are neccessary for all band members?

So when finding people to play with how much does all this other stuff including personal baggage (criminal record, marriages divorces, public positions on politics etc) matter to you?

oliver

PS I may stand corrected while starting at the top is not feasible for most - though - for vocalists if you can make it to the finals of various competitions maybe you can start at near the top and have top flight help on costuning, hair, lighting, staging, recording, equipment, advertising and and and and and
