I have an extensive vinyl collection, much of which is not available on CD. I had an extra PC so I got a turntable with a USB out and can now rip MP3's from my LPs! You still get the pops and cracks but it's tolerable and most of my LPs are in good shape. First album I ripped was Rainbow Bridge. Why isn't this record available on CD? Can I rip the tracks as wav files instead of MP3s? The software is integrated with iTunes and I'm not sure you can import wav files into iTunes.

Just use any other basic recording software. Audacity is free - note that you will need to set song markers manually after recording each album side - or you can leave them as one long file, or record each track separately. All are a pain in the ass, of course, but will give you the option of file type you want to save as.

Roxio Creator audio editor lets you add song markers fairly easy ( you have to find the gaps manually, though), then save the divided tracks - then you have to rename them unless you are happy with track 1-1, 1-2, etc.

There's software that will help you remove snaps, crackles and pops, too.

Thanks Mike. After doing some research I see there are quite a few programs that will let you rip them as wav files and let you cleanup the tracks. Probably have to buy one to get something that really works.

Yes you can... I click and drag wav. files onto I-tunes and in that format they can be played in that format on your computer. But if you want to put them on an apple device ipod/iphone etc... you have to convert them to the AAC format.

ALAC is a better choice than AAC.

True ALAC is consider lossless and if it's an archive it would be the better choice. I've never really noticed the difference but it's there.
Everything I use it for is really throw away anyway... a mix to work on lyrics... quality is not an issue but earbuds do suck!
