I think I have heard the term or saying"A Starving Artist" thrown around before.. not quite sure what to make of the saying as to what is it's revelance to a TRUE ARTIST and not just some poser faking the life of a TRUE ARTIST..

I think the term was always a reference to the people who devoted career to art, but never got that big break, and therefore aren't able to earn an actual living doing it, but continue to try in hopes that the day will come.

Just a guess.

If one is doing what he loves, what he is called to do in life.

Is one truly ever "starving" ?

If one's concern is art . . . and not from whence his next scrap of sustenance will come, or where one might seek shelter.

Then we know nothing of starvation.

or the "barriers to entry" were too great to get a foot in the door, .. but most probably the reason is family connections getting you the break you need to hit the big time, from art to show business, and everything in between, even having a propane business in Tennessee with the ex-governor as your badge to success....

Starving Artist: Someone, who can't generate enough of a meaningful social and cultural impact with their gouramis or other knick-knack artifacts, to demand a steady revenue stream from it.

I should qualify this:

Restated:

Starving Artist: Someone, who can't generate enough of a meaningful social and cultural impact with their gouramis or other knick-knack artifacts, to demand a steady revenue stream from it.

A starving artist was at one time a quite literal term. People would move to someplace like Paris, get a cheap flat, an easel and some canvas and try to sell paintings. Unfortunately, many people are only interested in your art after you have passed away, so many went hungry. These days the term might apply to kids living out of vans eating Ramen noodles.

sounds like Hitler hating modern art, it was not classical art so it sucked.. or you could reverse that.. maybe not punk enough to be art?.. if it's too complex and can't be copied by a hack then it sucks I suppose..

LOL Dane you crackin me up...

The answer is very simple: Produce art that meets social and cultural standards. How High? As high as you can possibly push it... when you get there, push it even higher...Rinse and repeat...

I just think some people use the term or the idea in order not to have to keep and hold a real job. They are starving cause they refuse to take resposibility for thier own well being, think someone should take care of them for some reason.

I have bought some very nice pictures at some of those starving artist sales
