Grant! A dreamscape

I dreamed that I was a playing a set in a dive bar, with a handful of people in attendance.
At a point in the dream I was looking in a back room and it was set up as a bedroom.
A friend said, "they live in here?"
"Yeah. This used to be a duplex. I visited over here a couple times when I was a kid.", I said.
And it was a converted duplex - a couple houses away from my parents house; my home for a long part of my life.
The set was familiar and the band was familiar in the dream, but upon waking the familiarity faded.
After the set with the familiar material and familiar band, another "set" was requested.
Then, of a sudden a singer from a past band was there and we started playing songs from a band I was in four years ago or so.
I expressed reservation and protest that I didn't know the songs anymore...

Side dream:

at this point i remembered in the dream, or thought in the dream, that i had just had a dream where i was called to play Bass for some bands set, that USED to be familiar, but I didnt know the tunes anymore - and that in that dream (the other dream) i kept alternating between getting distracted and saying, "sh*t, i gotta sit in the car or something and go over these songs".

back to main dream:

...we started playing the songs in the current dream, and played a few before I woke up - one we played like it was still four years ago, and the "crowd" liked that song better than any song that I played in the 'featured in the dream' band. A song called time for change.

Now after being awake, I can't remember if it was a different dream that I had a few days ago, or if it was a dream within a dream.

Cool Dream Zip!

Here's my take on it...

The challenge of remembering old songs , in conjunction with an old, but familiar environment could mean a couple of things:

(BTW Dream within a dream or 'having a dream about having a dream' is a distinct thought wave, aside from the primary dream (you multi-tasker, you! ;)

Drawing a long breath.......

Songs can be likened to 'principles' or 'motifs' within our lives. When we create and express (or cover them with zeal), we actually present a very 'high-level' overture of some passing phases of our own lives. When dreaming about songs, which you cant remember how to express.... you could say that such portion of your life is no longer an overture...Not important anymore.

The environment we dream of is typically symbolic of a state of body and/or ego. (including the health thereof). Home or proximity of home, is usually a sign of comfort and trust.

Therefore.... It is quite possible that your dream is examining the changing context of your trusts and comforts. Way back when, certain things in your life were very important, and those songs, which you knew with precision, reflected that. The context of trust surrounding your own principles and motifs had correlated accordingly.

Life changes, and as such, so does the context of trust. In your dream, you are likely examining how that old set of parameters will fit in current parameters. The good news...is your life engages change...the better news, is your conscience and instinct is having that conversation with you and is trying to guide you.

In short, you probably have been trying to reconcile your involvement with certain venues, opportunities, and you may just be realizing that you have out grown them...

Re: Dream within a dream... While your conscience attempts to guide you, your doubts might dismiss these instincts as surreal, unreal, or nonviable. (You have doubts) To escape the dream within the dream, I like to insist on telling and trying to make myself fly... The disappointment, which follows, is enough to convince myself to wake up and face the real dream :D

Wellp...
Pretty much what has been going on in the waking world, is...
I'm out of the game.
I'm not playing with any bands.
Work, and autistic toddler takes up all my time - I don't even have time to 'practice'. I pluck around on the acoustic with him there, but he wants to help, or he wants to pluck it or strum it with his palm. If wants to and or doesn't want me to at that moment, he slaps his hand down on the strings to deaden it.
So it has been work, kid, work, kid, on and on.
There's an inner struggle going on with me not being able to do it...

It's gotten to the point where I'm actually starting to think it is be

Being taken away from me.
By god or whatever you wish to call it.
... It's not JUST the lack of time. It seems like whatever technical ability I had is diving fast.

It was an ultra weird irony that a basic rock song spewed out of my as if already pre written, the other day. Maybe it was a little jab at me from the universe - a joke at my expense.
If I DO get a few minutes of me time anymore, I can't write, I struggle to play stuff that used to be comfortable...

It's a mess. Inside me.

Zip, Like I said...Change is good. Dont rush any decisions, and remember, love for your family is far superior to passion for music... A family loves back and good stuff grows from that.

I leave you with a really cool saying that I picked up from a gamer:

"Realty is that part of the imagination, that everybody can agree on"

As I see it bro, imagination should always be steered by love... Stay by your toddler and your wife. Good things will come out of this for them and for you :)

Well if I had a wife or a partner, I could have some 'me time', lol

It's been a mindfeck when it changes so much, and a good quarter of my life identity has been music based. Regardless if I had talent or not.

Sometimes, just listening to other people's music is the answer. Let your own playing take a backseat for a while.
When your kid's in bed, and you do feel the urge to play, plug in an electric and use headphones so you don't wake him.

i was just gonna say the same thing guitarmike did.... wait til your little one is in bed and have at it w some phones.

we all go thru periods where we feel we're being mocked by the creativity gods but rest assured it's most likely just a temporary thing.

everyone's way thru it is different. whether that be putting it aside for awhile or trying to power hit thru the slump.

my money is on you persevering and coming out the other side a-ok.

eye on the prize there, youngster. and as us jazzbo geezers like to say ..."straight ahead".

Sorry about your circumstance Zip! Thats why I call music a journey because at some point in most musician live's there comes a time when you just have to put the music on the backburner. I had to. Just keep in mind that most things in life are not permanent . Stay focused on that child, play when you can to keep the basic skills and someday things will change and you can get back on the bike and ride again!
