i'm a big fan.

a few months back there was a thread about 7 stringers and i put up some video of CH. as i recall a cpl of peons ( GTzip? ) slammed him as playing old fogey elevator music. yeah, right!

guess i been riding in the wrong elevators cos' his sh*t ain't nuthin i EVER heard in an elevator.

Zip leans toward heavy music.

When I saw this, what got me was the frets on his instrument, the way they flare, it just seems like it would take a lot of effort to play that thing, but I can appreciate what he does all the same.

In his words Im a linear guitar player! LOL!

If you watch it, and I know its long, but listening to him talk about his take on music is unique.

Yeah, I've listened to him before.
He was signed to Primus' Prawn Song Label.
I dunno where he is signed currently.
I thought about getting a guitar with fanned frets, before.
But, it doesn't seem like it's worth the extra cost.

Its such a hybrid instrument.

The bass strings are 29" scale and the guitar strings are 25" scale, hence the flared frets, just seems like it would be hard to adjust your mind to it.

I can go between a bass and guitar without any problems, but doing it all at the same time, WOW!

he's an interesting and very articulate cat. certainly articulate on his instrument.

yeah, the independence thing of comping a great bass line on the "bass strings" while playing melody and improvising solos on the "gtr strings" blows my mind.

i have no idea how he does it or how anyone adjusts to that Novak fanned fret system. it seems like it would be so weird have to an adjust for the different strng length (fret placement) of each string.

i saw him a cpl of yrs ago on some small market cable tv show. he was playing w a drummer and there was an air head lady hosting and interviewing them between songs. she actually asked him if the instrument he played is more difficult to play than a regualr gtr!

he was very polite and broke it down for her in small bite size kernels she could understand.

well, i prolly woulda socked her one, but he was real nice about it. his drummer did roll his eyes and do a take when she asked.

I liked his personality from the video, he seems like a guy you could hang out with and enjoy being around talking about music.

WOW!

Hes an outstanding player, but that music is best suited for cocktail lounges or movies with cocktail lounge scenes. I say this because its light and fluttery , non-intense...which is perfect if you don't like to think too hard, and if you like to hold conversation without having to yell.

Its a great show of skill-technical capabilities...

But, For me, it doesn't artistically move me... (Not that it 'has' to... but i'm just a picky bastard that way)
