After showering and dressing this morning, I head downstairs and hear this great BANG_BANG_BANG_BANG!

5 cars, including 2 head-on in front of the house next door.

Article and picture here (the picture was taken just as I left for work 45 minutes after the crash): http://www.eagletribune.com/latestnews/ ... oad-closed

It was a tricky commute this morning, even though the air temp was 37, black ice formed at certain parts of the road. One particular area I know that always ices up was real bad, and the idiot behind me wants to tailgate me. Sure enough, the pickup in front of me fishtails and spins out. I'm actually surprised the death toll from driving isn't much higher.

I'm a big sci-fi guy
In a book by Larry Niven I read years ago there was segment where the hero - far in the future and who is a combustion engine fan - drives a car on the remaining parts of the LA Free Way that are "preserved" - and comments on how there is no radar or any devices to locate other vehicles .... and gives props to us for not killing any more of us than we have ....
Anyway always remembered that part ....
So far the " future " is a let down
2013 and no flying cars or public space travel ....
LAME

I've been wearing a belt since before the law was enacted.
When I was with MOBIL OIL a seat belt infraction would cost you your job.
And there were plenty of people waiting around to have a go at your position.
Just got to be automatic. Get in buckle up.

That part about the idiot that wants to tailgate you under icing conditions is amazing. Now what do you do?? You have already tripled or even quadrupled your stopping distance safety zone, and now you have some one with NO comprehension wanting to give you an emergency enema.

Who the heck licensed this person ? I guess you are pretty cool with people threatening your life and prosperity with this reckless behavior.

When I was 18, I was parked, not moving, just about to get out of my car to pick up a girl at her parents home. The roads were iced over and driving was slow and tricky. Around the corner comes some one else, on a curve, and slams into me. I don't know what I smashed inside my car, but I ended up bloody, and so did the the other guy. Keep in mind this was all pre seatbelt. It was still a low speed crash.

As far as seat belts, low speed crashes can generate tremendous injuries. Seat belts can help tremendously with that. As far as saving your ass in crashes over 20 mph,,, who knows.

I was very happy, my next car had seat belts,,, Long before some , legislator decided I had to be protected,,, BY THE LAW!

I've been in all kinds of crashes, from low speed to moderately fast. Only got hurt in one - the one I wasn't wearing a seatbelt.

I'm no fan of legislation or legislators.

And I have as a nurse seen plenty of injury caused by the seat belt.

Though it may or may not make a damn bit of difference in a high speed crash. It most definitely anchors your butt to the seat so that a capable driver can maintain control over his vehicle during violent maneuvers.

Cars and Trucks are far more dangerous than any guns. We allow a person to take a 3 thousand pound to 80 thousand pound bullet out on the roads with little more than a 10 minute proficiency test.

The privilege to use public roads has become more of a RIGHT, than the second amendment.

Jimmy, I am sorry you have been involved in so many minor accidents. In 40 years of driving, everything from cars to 53 foot trailers, doubles, and even in my younger stupid days,, overloaded oil trucks.

I'm not trying to hammer you here,,,, But could the difference between you and me be,,,, that I recognize the TREMENDOUS PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY when you TURN THE KEY. You have to explain how I can put on millions of miles without an accident.

You are right. I wouldn't trust you with a gun. :)

I trained on tanks for a while and the tank man's death is fire. For a long time I didn't wear seatbelts as a result. I'd rather get smushed than burned to death.

But I started looking at it rationally (took a while) and a) I'm not driving a tank; and b) the stats say a seatbelt is going to help a lot more than it is apt to hurt.
