I gave a listen. I don't know that I'd quite call it Jazz, but it seems to have elelments of Jazz in it.
It seems more like new wave or something . . .
But, sometimes I have a hard time classifying music . . .
The recording was clean, and not too bad at all - kinda reminded me of the sound-track for the movie, "Thief," with James Cann, which came out - what - 20 years ago? Good sound-track, by the way . . . .

The song reminds me of something that Walter Carlos might have done, years ago . . . . back when the synthesizer was called a Moog.

This may not relate to this post but, I saw where 'Steely Dan' was hosting a Jazz Fest. Which they are one of my favorite all time bands period. In my personal opinion, They have made some of the best recordings Ive ever heard as far as quality, tech, etc. Let alone, I think they are simply a great band period. A question I would like to ask is, Is it correct to classify them as a Jazz Band? I do believe that they are in a catagory all by their self. There is rock, funk, jazz, etc. And then there is " Steely Dan"! I would like to hear some other opinions & points of view on this matter from some Steely Dan fans......Peace.

matt zitos about the only person in hear who's opinion I would trust on jazz so I hope he'll chime in but...
steely dan def used some jazzy chops and chord choices in their music, and I could see how someone might think they were jazzy, but they are far from what I would call a jazz group.

Gee, my opinion is worthless.
But - yeah, Vocals & Bass, I'd classifly Steely Dan as doing Jazz.
A few of my songs are reminiscint of Steely Dan.
By the way, the name of the group was kind of a joke with them.
The name Steely Dan is a reference to a sex - instrument, from an obscure movie. I forget the name of the movie, but - I have a copy of it somewhere.
By the way, Mike, - that's not my opinion - I got that information from an interview with Steely Dan I saw . . . .
But - I don't want to get in any discussion about other groups.
The only group that matters to me is the group of musicians here and now, talking about their own music.
I won't be collaborating with Steely Dan, but I could collaborate with people here . . .

No offence samick, zito is in a class far above and beyond when it comes to jazz. I mean that with no ill will. I'll do you a favor and stop short of comparing the two of you.

My only claim is that to be qualified as a jazz group the majority of your music should be jazz. Do you hear stealy dan played on any sunday morning jazz shows? Certainly there may have been some influence there... but who the hell isn't influenced by jazz on one level or another? -perhaps only ppul who have never heard it.

I like steely dan. But when I think "jazz group" I'm thinking bella fleck or tribal tech or pat metheny group. JMO As a rule - I'm not sure there has ever been a 'jazz group' that has broken the top 40 pop charts... at least not in the thirty years.

Mike, you misunderstood. They didn't say they were a jazz group. I was refferring to the interview where they said the name of a group was a joke from a movie.

I don't hear them playing standards out of the 'real book' so I'm gonna say they were 'influenced' by jazz -but did not play jazz... again... JMO.

Steely Dan was the name of a dildo in William Burroughs not so obscure novel, Naked Lunch.
The movie "based on" the book they made in 1991 (link - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0102511/) was kind of obscure, but Steely Dan was well established by then.
It's fairly common knowledge these days - I'm not an expert in dildos with names
