Is it ok for someone else to pick the guitar tone/effect/patch you will be using on the piece you are currently playing/writing/involved with at the moment?
My answer is the 3rd choice...
"Which finger would like broken off"?
"Whoever is playing the instrument in question is most qualified to judge the situation at hand". Yea, I'd take a suggestion but when the cards hit the table, I still reserve the right to use whatever tone/effect(s)/patch as I see fit providing that choice is not "over the top" or "in bad taste".
Make all the suggestions you want, if any of them are any good, I'd consider them but that's all. Ultimately I'll do what I think sounds the best and if the person doesn't play guitar, that's an even bigger reason to just ignore them.
Likewise, I might suggest to another player what might sound good but would never have the unmitigated balls to ask someone else to use a different patch other than what they are using and liking.
(Go back to Moe's Art Disco and get a stiff drink, cause you need one.)

if lalong was running the operation, then yes, it is obvious he has a good intellect, and should decide the overall tone, and if he said jump, I'd say, "how high"?

If it is a producer or you are doing the job of producer, then yes it's OK - and the person had better listen with an open mind.
Between fellow players? Hands off.

Cap'n I have had help with my guitar tone many times over the years. Personally I am in search of that ever elusive "perfect tone" while I think I know what sound I am looking for IMO it always helps to have other opinions and advise. I believe that is one of the area's a producer helps and ultimately has the final say during mixing!

I've tried to play the game democratically and keep a "hands off" policy.
But, that approach has been a dismal failure.
I'm at a point now where I am making the final decisions.
If people wanna come along for the ride, great.
If not, the door is over there.
If I play in someone else's band I'll play by their rules.
But, in my band you play by mine.
Here, I am the director, producer, whatever you wanna call it.

If he had his way, you would have gotten the clean version of "Invisible Light". (>??>??>?????????)(faq you)(>/??//?????/??/?/?????)
(as in WAY less effects)

This is a fing scream considering I got some nasty email like I was throwing him over the cliff. NOT TRUE..
Some chick wrote me that he was suicidal.
I thought to myself, "hardly".
FYI
Generally he'd have (3) piano figures to pick from.
I select the ONE I thought was the best of the three.
We'd talk about it.
He'd lay a basic percussion track.
He'd then lay his piano/keys track.
I'd lay my guitar track. (basic)
I'd lay a solo track (if needed).
I'd lay a bass guitar track.
I'd lay a vocal track.
I'd lay extra vocal tracks.
And then he'd go into this big thing about "Mastering", where it could take from 1 week to ? for him to "trial and error" basically patch surfing his way to a point where he was "ok" with what had been done.
(My mastering takes 24 hours and then I am onto the next one.)
I maintain that I like a live setup where it has fewer tracks to master because the idea is to be able to recreate what you do fairly easily ON STAGE.
He likes the convex where the more tracks that go in make it a more complex sound.
I don't like the 1000 track tune, it's not very representative of what you do in person.
I liked him as a keys player and as a co-writer. I don't need him as my own personal "dungeon master of disaster".
Just because you create stuff well together doesn't mean that both parties are on the same wavelength. We do not hear the same thing and it was ok while we both understood what was going on, but it stopped being a workable situation once the music got more complex.
The last one was more complex but suddenly it was just what he thought instead of what "we" thought and that won't do.
If I was going to listen to what the world thought I should do, I'd still be in the UK mixing dance music into my brand of psychedelic and you won't hear that sh*t either.

Mike, IMO a happy band is a democracy with a leader that has the final say. I think "the my way or highway" attitude is a little close minded. If you are asking people to contribute to your songs without compensation they should have a say in it. However if you are paying them they should do what you want how you want. That is why I bought my own recorder write, perform ALL parts, record, produce my songs BY MYSELF! That way no one gets pissed. If I want advise I post it here and ask for critique's 60% of the time I agree with the advise and I can take it or leave it!

Basically, yeah.
Any older Marshall with any Les Paul will get you in the right neighborhood.
Get a broken-in 1960a cab, or a Mesa cab.
Tung-Sol tubes.
Good to go.

I've been there and done that, in other people's bands.
There has to be some balance.
If anyone has ideas, let's hear them.
But, I make the final say.
Someone has to do it, or else no one will contribute anything and nothing gets accomplished.
Been there done that, too...too many times.

You'll never catch me "cheating" on my strat with a Les Paul.
And no you can't pick the patch on that tune either..lol (ASSHOLES)
I'll take a bevy of suggestions and make an educated selection, else get a robot or play a synth part..just don't ask me.
No "I" in team and no one died and made you King, nor Emperor.
If one person is making all the decisions, let him or her play all the parts.
SIMPLE AND EASY..

You'd be surprised at how much more damage I can do with a stock MIJ 54ish RI type guiitar.
I have 1 in particular that just plays by itself.
(I think someone died while playing it and that suits me fine. When I go, I hope I get sucked into it as well.)
Other than that I use an Axis Fuzz, a Rocket Octavia (the faqer keeps breaking) and a Sweet Sounds Univibe when I play for real.
I use a 2203 with 2 Peavy 412S and I don't push em real hard.
(I don't like the breakup, I like it cleaner and loud.)
Yeah I use basically the same couple tone(s), but it does 1000 different things. I don't need a new patch to play a new tune, I just need to understand the melody of any given song and I can make it work.
I consider that a boon and not a fault.
I don't like hotrails, played 'em before.
I like a stock pickup usually or the setup where you wire in a dummy single to reduce noise.
