Well...I have this friend who bought a Tabla (he's a drummer) ...and we fixin to create some cool stuff. But After reviewing the info on what it takes to maintain the sitar, holy moly my work is cut out for me.

Our lead guitarist has a Ravish Sitar pedal, makes some interesting sitar-like sounds for the few Beatles songs we need it for. Line 6 PodFarm has a sitar imitation sound, too, but nothing like the real thing.

A sitar is nice for effect but you don't want to use it a lot or it will change your direction too much.

I just uploaded a song called "Mimizrach (From the East)" to my profile that features an electric sitar played with an e-bow. The feel of this song reminds me of long lonely drives across the range of Texas.

Mark I intend to actually study the scales and timing... At least up to the third grade level... Definately will learn how to tune it, string it, etc. Then I'll play it like I was an American tourist...

JW I dont know how well the intrument can accommodate Pick ups. I do know that there are some hybrid sitars out there that have the makings of both a sitar and an electric guitar...I guess they use pick ups there.

JC I can see what you mean about the GH connection, But my intention is to use the sitar this in a' Post Punk/New Wave' project That I am trying to line up (Wont be for another year.) First I gotta learn how to play it...and If I dont wind up using it for a wall decoration, it will be used to supplement Moods in many songs. Less as feature...

Does the place that you got the sitar from do jawari work? If not, you may want to add that to your list of maintenance studies. To keep the sitar sounding sweet, you need to maintain the curve of the bridge for a good jawari buzz.

Once you get familiar with a sitar, you could easily also find your way around on an esraj ... it sort of like a cross between a cello and a sitar, a cello with frets and sympathetic strings. You may even find it to be more suited for some of the roles you may intend to be using sitar for .. the exotic moody effects.

Best of all it can also be fitted with a little horn attachment turning it into a cello sized stroh fiddle!
