my jaw has dropped listening to Mahogany Rush playing LIVE at California Jam 2 in 1978, I had never heard Mahogany Rush doing a rendition of Johnny B. Goode before, and at the following youtube video link I would appreciate it if somebody could point out what effects pedals or technique with a whammy bar? Frank Marino was using from 5:23 to 7:34? at 7:01 I hear a sound reminiscent of the beginning of "Mean Motor Scooter" by Montrose..whatever the knucklehead meant in the comments section that Johnny Winter's version was better had better think again..

Hey I was at that show! Yep Frank tore it up and there were a lot of great bands there that day. Frank had a huge selection of pedals. I know he liked flange, octave divider, and wah but who knows what else. Here is a little history on Frank the player and his gear choices.

Dane it sounds like an OctoVibe Pedal to me, and then he kicks in a Echo-Plex and makes the delays longer in that section.

Probably had a tube screamer and a flanger going at the same time.

I saw them a couple of times in the late 70s and he had one of the largest pedal boards I had seen at that time, and he used them.

Thanks for sharing that, I kinda forget some groups and this is one of them, they used to come thru Memphis quite a bit, and I loved Mahogany Rush!

He had played in Beaumont TX only a few months prior to this and after the concert, he came out to the Foxy Lady to jam with local hero, Scott McGill. Scott didn't know any Mahogany Rush so they jammed on Johnny B Goode.


Shortly afterword Frank Marino started doing it regularly, and this Scott's "jam" version he is playing. By the way, Scott wiped the floor with him that night.
