Ran into a 1986 Made in Japan Squire stratocaster.
Previous yahoo had taken off some sort of locking nut, which is ok, as long as it didn't come with the locking nut. There's a Floyd patended trem, but the body didn't get routed that I saw.... it only goes down, body blocks the up.
Horrendous paint job done by someone.

They want 350 for it... but it is so hard to verify what is real and what is not, and what has been tweaked and what hasn't been.

I'm fixing to call them up and axe for the the serial number.

Early Squiers were the best but essentially worthless if someone hacked away at it.

Yeah, from your description, it's probalby not worth exploring, and certainly not at that price.

No way it's worth 350. Not even 250.

FWIW, you can buy a NICE japan-made mid-80's kramer focus 3000,6000 for $350-$400 and it will sound and play far better than a squier-strat 8)

It may be a nice squire, I've seen some that were unreal but that's not worth the $ they are asking.

the hype about squires and mexi strats is complete crap,

in the 80's most of us figured out the the quality control at fender was very high at any facility they produce from,
that to buy an american made strat was just vanity and patriotism.
the guitar it self whether from japan, mexico or Indonesia was always the same,
and allways the off shore electronics were sh*t.
but you were going to dump that stuff anyway,

buy this guitar,
http://www.amazon.com/Fender-Standard-S ... fsrc=fstfx
from your favorite dealer

install this in it

http://www.emgpickups.com/products/index/81/7/1

and you will keep that guitar the rest of your life,
I guarantee it.

Damn you JCP.
Damn you, damn you, damn you...

To me it just depends on how the guitar plays, I think the higher end guitars may have more consitency than the lower dollar ones.

Without touching it and feeling you will never know if its a good guitar or not.

If Im checking out a guitar the first thing I do is strum some big open chords acoustically (no amp), if it doesnt ring and sustain then I set it down and forget about it, no matter whether its Knock off LP or the real deal, and I have played some very expensive guitars that just didnt do it for me, and Ive played some very cheap guitars that did do it for me. Next I check out the intonation, and look over the neck to make sure there arent any issues there, if I sense something then Im done.

I never cared for any of the squires I played, I went on and got a USA Strat back in the early 90s and I have still have it, but that one just sang to me when I put it on.

I have two . . . and they don't sound better.

That's why I went to the ES 339 . . .

As subjective as that is.
