My car club has been wanting a PA system for events to run music and announcements. The board was all set to spend $1000 and I volunteered to do a little craigslist fishing first to see what I could find.
The bad: Wow there are a lot of flakes out there! I looked at three sets of speakers, all whose ads said "works great" "good condition" "sound excellent" ... Nope. Blown horns, blown woofers, fried x-overs. Sheesh! Did they think no one would notice??
The good: Found a nice set of Yamaha S115IV cabs and a Crate PA-6 head for $400. The gear is in like new condition, sounds great with music and mics and will easily run at 120db all day long. Scoreboard!
In the end it took a lot longer to do than I planned but I'm sure the club will be happy with the result. Slinking around chasing quality used gear is actually something I enjoy.
