Im old school guitar player, basic pentatonic blues scale! LOL!

Over the last few years only one guitarist had caught my ear and that was Tom Morello, but recently I was watching That Metal Show, and John 5 was the guest guitarist, and after listening to him, I realize that rock guitar playing is as vital as it ever was.

Most of the guest players that come on that show are great, but they are one trick ponys, after you hear them wank for a minute or two they really dont have anything else in thier bag of tricks, but John 5 is awesome, every time they let him play, he did something totally diffferent than before.

So any of you jaded rock guitarist looking for someone cool to maybe listen to, check out John 5.

I never handicapped myself when I was learning guitar by playing one style. I like playing it all from country to blues to metal. John 5 tore it up. I recorded a couple of different versions of "Beat It" myself back in the day.

Please . . . no one tell my band ( or my mother ) that I listened to BEAT IT

We were asked if we did any country music today.

My front man leaned over away from his mic and said in my ear.

"That'll be a cold day in hell" 8)

I'm being pushed to be more of a lead player every day.
It's difficult to not get stuck into favorite routines irregardless of genre'

Respect

According to John 5, he never stopped learning.
If he can't find a teacher to show him something new, he takes tutorial videos, books, and CDs on tour with him to keep studying.
He says he never wants to be in a situation where he can't do what someone wants.

I had heard his name, but I dont listen to Marilyn Manson type stuff, just not my thing, although I like that song Beautiful People, but when I saw him guest on That Metal Show, man he just blew me away.

Then I started looking on youtube for his stuff, man oh man, he can do country, chicken picking with the best, plus shred with anyone, plus he puts in these little funny elements to things he does, that you just dont expect, I respect a person who can play like him and have a sense of humor about it, plus he plays a Tele style guitar, never heard one played quite like he does before, and that include my idol Page or early Beck!

Hes the first of the new breed of guitarist that really has caught my ear.

George be careful listening to him, he does have a lot of satanic elements in his song titles and songs hes done, but hes the real deal. Kinda ironic that a guy like that has given me a little faith in new stylings of music.

Satan has no power over me . . . I see his works and his ways all around me and especially in myself. I know him, I am not afraid.
Not for my wisdom or power for I have none.
But for my Father whom is the creator and master of the universe.

Thanks for the heads up just the same.

"Beat It" is one of those tunes that a lead guitarist can go off on. I tried to play it conservatively but my fingers have a mind of their own. I put up a small sample on my page I recorded back in high school.
