zappa is like the lost & found on the internet

I would imagine most music critiques go something like this:

mmmmmmmmm

well it's not journey or AC/DC, definitely not moddona,
texas blues?, nope
I do hear lectric guitar
must be a zappa ripoff.
yep thats it
put it in the zappa file.
God knows that covers a lot of ground.

The guitar playing on this does not sound like Zappa at all. The track itself, overall does sound faintly reminiscent of the title track from Zappa's 1986 "Jazz From Hell". Zappa's piece was recorded entirely on a digital synth, to exploit the synth's inhuman, mechanical quality ... the very antithesis of a jazz performance ... the way one might imagine jazz would sound in hell.

This piece actually sounds much more hellish than the Zappa track, maybe due to the cheesier sounds and general sound quality. This piece is labeled as being Free Jazz though it is much less free in the rhythmic feel than the Zappa track, it seems more random or aimless than free. The addition of the guitar with plenty of un-Zappa-like whammy bar/pinched harmonic metal shredder cliches, and our ears descend to an even lower circle of Hell than Zappa had in mind.

In that sense, this piece definitely succeeds!

not sure really, could be his penchant for absurdity.

I always felt ZAPPA was willing to go where other musicians were
uncomfortable and that is where he found originality and uniqueness.
(is that a word?) [/b]

Zappa was a genius, and like many other geniuses he was sometimes misunderstood. Most people either love him or hate him (at least his music). Zappa was fond of absurdity because, let's face it, the music business is absurd. It takes a special kind of craziness to make it in music.
