I honestly have mixed feelings on this one. The police did offer the homeless a ride to a shelter that agreed to take them in..

But the preacher did lease the land, although there was no occupancy permit, or permitted by city code.

Seems like a stunt to me, but then again, would that also make OWS a stunt?

I also have mixed feelings about allowing a homeless shelter in a residential neighborhood, and it was probably the people who rose a stink and pushed the City's hand to do something.

There are lots of homeless in California and for the most part, many of them are harmless and really want to get their lives on track or are happy living outside of society. But then you have the mentally ill, some of which who are not on medication and who exhibit violent tendencies, you have the substance abusers, and general deadbeats who would go around begging everyone for money, despite having a place to stay. You get people going around the neighborhood digging in your trash or wandering around or the drug addicts breaking in homes - no wonder the public gets pissed off.

I have a few homeless people I give odd jobs to and a couple of our friends let them sleep in their sheds and garages. If you're going to do something like this, you have to put into place stringent rules and have security on hand to deal with them. I still don't think any residential area will welcome them with open arms, but perhaps they can find a semi-rural environment where they could set up their own community.

Yeah, easier said than done.

like Mr. Larry Rice said, who is the Spiritual Leader, you would think the police would be tracking down the guy that poured gas on a homeless person and set him ablaze instead of shutting down a TEMPORARY shelter area to give the poor on the streets some relief...guess it's easier to pick on those with no money to hire lawyers than it is to do the right thing and find the murderer who set the homeless person on fire..

Dane, you are THE pasty CRACKA that feels guilty that you are a WHITE BOYA! Hey bro. if you feel so bad for the homeless I invite you to take as many of them "that you can" into YOUR HOME! No need to put a guilt trip on the rest of us! Just "silently take them in and feed them!

better to ask why in Sweden or Germany as examples, homelessness is not much of a problem there.. if they can fix the problem, then America needs to learn from their example..

dude, I just thought you had some compassion on your fellow man, I posted that article, because people like Larry Rice wants to help people that for the most part are suffering mental problems and are unable to help themselves, but government (in this case city government) won't allow him to help.. city council does not see the need to alleviate suffering.. the money's not even coming out of city council's pocket, Larry is paying for it cause he knows the Word spoke by Jesus Christ.. "to the least of the brethern you help you do it to me" so when you help a needy person Jesus will remember this, and he will remember the hard hearts like you too..
