What's wrong with music today.

Dog, Yod, and so many of the rest of you that are are writing and playing your own material.
After watching Carmine last night I realized what made him so loved by so many other musicians. He just loves to play.

But even funnier is the era he grew up in. Go look it up, Clapton ,Santana, Hendrix, Dylan, THIS LIST IS ENDLESS..... All original artists.

Now don't get me wrong. Last night he did a bunch of cover tunes. If you can't do a cover tune AND HAVE FUN then you are really limiting yourself.

But looking back at all the songs he recorded, 80% of them I never heard of. However they were original songs. Many of them weren't that good. None the less he still got out there and played them.

Today if you look on Craigs list all you see is musicians looking up to do tribute bands or this era covers or that eras covers. Same for here.

Many of you here have some very good musical skills,,, but very few of you believe enough in yourselves to bring out some great new music.
I'm tired of playing smoke on the water. Thanks DOG, hope you don't mind us playing one or two of your songs for fun. :)

I think people are just plain scared to PERFORM their own tunes. Cover mentality is rampant in the Kansas City live music scene. Sucks. In order to get PAID local gigs you have to play covers, at least mainly covers.
God willing y'all will be getting a healthy dose of our band's originals. Within a few weeks 2 or 3 studio cover versions are going on my Badmix profile page.

Carmine Appice? I can't think of any other Carmines from that era. But, I can't say I followed his career much, what original music did he make? He was more a road warrior in different bands, no?

Carmine Appice is one of the most aggressive drummers ever to walk the streets of this planet. His work with Cactus and Jeff Back still cause me to reach for my guitars and my guns simultaneously. The cat can do it.

Yeah! My old buddy Tony is almost there. I have one of the best drummers around. He has just been hanging with these guys and they keep him just off the cusp. I think a little confidence boost and he is over the top.
I have seen him play cover, tap and keep time. SHIIT I can do that.

I got to see Carmine last night. He sorta wrote the standard 40 years ago.
He was still kickin some really great players to be unbelievable. Amazing how much better you get when play with better players.

Talbot,,,, HE KICKED !!!!! Sorry you missed it.

I love it when I hear drummer jokes.
This guy didn't need a guitar or bass to back him up.

:) He's even older than me!

I remember this kid I used to work with in the 80s and she loooooved Carmine Appice and Jeff Beck. She went on and on and on and on and on about how great they were to the point where I had to check them out and understood what she was talking about.

I'm not afraid to perform, quite the contrary, and I believe in myself and my talent. I'm going to be honest, I really don't like performing covers. I like to pick and choose what I want to sing and the songs I like aren't necessarily popular tunes that other people want to hear. Other than that, I've always just suffered from the wrong stuff. Musically, my luck has been absolutely horrible. If I relayed my true history, I'd be like that guy on the movie Airplane where people start committing suicide every time he tells them pieces of his life story. Sometimes I think I've had a curse on me, a huge red light. Lifewise, everything is great and I generally get what I want, but the minute I attempt to do something artistically it's like I got this post-it on my head that tells everyone to ignore me. Maybe I spurned the advances of Apollo or something.

Sorry Dog , I love "She don't love me no more" I just hope you realize you sang and wrote that so good that it is close to being a modern classic blues song.
I can't think of any thing as good in years. I LOVE IT.

Other than with the 20-somethings, the 'cover tune mentality' is everywhere. It's what the club/bar owners want and what the audience who spends money wants. If you do songs they don't know, they turn back to friends and drinks, talk and ignore you. Even doing little-known cover songs will illicit the same response.
