So I have this problem/issue/concern.
I open a letter and it's a gentleman I barely know.
(He invited us down to play a gig near MO last year, which I had to decline.)
I won't bore you with the details, point is he included a check.
He wants music from a musical entity that doesn't exist at this moment.
(5 more tunes he wants me to record..)
What should I do?
Do I just send him his $/check back?
I went down to my local bank and they say the check is legit.
It's not for a million bucks, so don't get all nutty on me.
What do you think? I am kind of leaning to send it back to owner.

From a purely business point of view if you arent going to send any music then send the check back, otherwise deliver some music.

How MUCH is the check? Did the guy have any expections on the 5 tunes?
Depending onthe amount, I'd spend a weekend writing, recording, and mixing them and be one with it.

Maybe I am not being specific enough...
He sent me $1K.
He's looking for the last setup which doesn't exist anymore.
(no piano to speak of and he's a big Elton fan..)(uh-huh)
I'm thinking it's probably better just to return the funds.
The more I think about it, the more chance it could get dicey in a hurry.
Yeah, I am thinking RETURN TO SENDER..cause I have no intentions of going to court in MO when his panties get in a twist..
I have to laugh, at first I thought LD/Dane were having me on..cause I was sure it was a hoax. I kinda still think it is.. Who the faq sends a check to someone you don't even know>?

If the band doesn't exist anymore there is nothing more to be said unless you can meet his expectations on your own.
200/ song is not a lot of money for all the time and sweat to put 5 original new songs together. imo
Probably not enough to get the others back together in one room and make it happen.
Return to sender.

well, i have folks (often surviving family of deceased princes from lands far, far away) who regularly respond to my "_____ for sale" ads offering to send me a check. they even offer to have folks "pick up item"!
why not just contact the guy...explain the situation exactly as it is, let him know what you can and can't do... and then let HIM decide how he wants to proceed?

I'd send it back... Nobody that I know of fronts a check for musical services not yet rendered... unless thay had an agent with Colonel preceding their name...
Even if its legit, your acceptance of the check, on the face of it binds you to a bevy of stuff you might not ever agree too under normal circumstances...
If you can call and talk to the guy , then agree to draft terms in writing, maybe that could fly...

It sounds like some kind of a scam to me capt. I would be very CAREFUL! I would destroy the check if it were me. Do you know them? If not all the more reason to burn that check!

Nah, I don't know him.
He invited the other setup I was playing in last year to some event in MO.
The next thing I know this guy sends me $1K.
I got 5 tunes in the hopper as usual, but no piano.
AND I don't want one at this point, just another set of ears trying hard to f**k up the music you are currently working on because no 2 people hear the same thing.
I'll go back to playing bass for $ before I try too hard.
That way I can stand in the back, be semi-drunken and not have to do too much.
But hey, send me more $ if any of you are crazy enough to do so..
You know I am honest. I even send the $ back..even if it's because I am afraid of being litigated upon. lol
It's only Asteroid Suicide Cult from here on in. If you send you hard earned dollars to me, I promise to squander them on food, booze and equipment and not in that order..
"What are YOU going to do when the Asteroid hits"? (don't drink the koolaid)

I'd tell him that 1k gets half a song....and send him an acoustic version with one vocal with a thank you card.

Capt,,, I've never seen you dance around an issue like this before.
Get in touch with the guy. What DO YOU EXPECT FOR A MEASLY GRAND?
Ask him if he has a favorite charity. After that you have another scammer on your butt. In that case be careful.

It sure seems like a scam to me. Remember the old saying if it sounds too good to be true? You said it yourself Cap'n who in there right mind would send a check to someone they don't even know? It sounds like a ruse to find out a persons identity and drain their account or at the very least open lines of credit in their name. Thats why I would DESTROY the check. That way the sender would not know the check actually made it to someone with your name and address. just saying BEWARE!
