Mike and I are finishing up on our latest track called “Turn”. If you find yourself with a little spare time, give it a listen and let us know what you think. No worries I enjoy criticism, it’s how stuff gets better. :)

Lyrics:
The party’s over and now it’s time to go.
You strap yourself in, turn the key,
hit the gas and roll
Heavy footed,
hear the sound of the tires burn

(Chorus)
The road that you are travelling
is a dead end turn.

(Verse2)
At the tables oh and your hand is hot.
All in or nothing, put up or shut up
Show me what you got.
And with a card flip it’s all gone,
will you ever learn.

(Chorus)
The road that you are travelling
is a dead end turn.

(Verse3)
Words exchanging, tempers flare
and the tension’s high.
In you face now, fist are clenched
anger in your eyes .
In an instant it will end without concern

(Chorus)
The road that you are travelling
is a dead end turn.

(Piano Solo)
(Guitar Solo)

(Chorus Transition)
The road that you are travelling on
is a dead end turn.
The road that you are travelling on
is a dead end turn.
The road that you are travelling on
is a dead end turn.

(Ending)
Turn, turn, won’t you turn.
Turn, turn, won’t you turn.
Won’t you turn, won’t you turn, won’t you turn.
Won’t you turn, turn, won’t you turn.

Lot of good things going on. Cool.
Assuming that the drum tracks are being done on keys, that is a weak link.

R&R needs that elusive drum track that smokes. Few notice it, but without a cranking drummer everything else falls short.

Thanks for sharing, for a collaboration online that was pretty cool.

Thanks for listening Glen. It’s a great point and I couldn’t agree more. Unfortunately right now it’s just Mike and I so we can only do with what we have. I was really pursuing a bassists and drummer for a while, but I got discouraged and we decide to forge ahead until then. If we get our parts down well, I don’t think getting as drummer to fall in around what’s there would be all that difficult.

It’s a chicken and egg thing it would be great to solicit a drummer, who of course won’t be interested, unless it sounds good in the first place. So right now we are just putting a lot of effort into the “sounding better” part. :) It’s come a long way from where it started. I’ll remain satisfying for me as long as there is improvement from project to project. So much to learn and the shortcuts are scarce.

For now we are still experimenting and still not 100% certain which direction to head. Mike want’s a more modern sound, I’m more set on rock. But we both agree to head towards something with much more edge than our previous popish stuff. Although Mike is a BM member, he is local and we do live sessions.

Overall Its a great theme, great song Idea, Well executed story.. Love the music and the direction it takes... Definitely got my attention...

Now some basics:

1) Vocals: Off pitch and out of tune in many of the sections... I recommend that you scrap the vocal tracks and redo them. Also, when you sing , relax and don't "try" to sound like like a rock star with your articulation. The melody and the song stand on their own quite well... Just keep heart into it and the rest will fall in place.

2) Levels: I thought maybe the piano should come forward. Really good keyboard work from whoever played it...Dont be shy about it during the mix.

3) Outro(End part: Wasnt crazy about it... It was almost "over climactic" given the cool, calculated gesture of the main theme... First, I saw a cool gambler sorting a problem out , followed by some circus midgets in a chinese fire drill ... LOL! I'm sorry but Its what I got from it... (it may say more about me than about the song)

All And all tho, I really liked it

RFLMAO Awesome man. Hey you’re the listener, so if you hear a circus midget, Chinese fire drill going on, then that was exactly what we had in mind. :D

I got carried away at the end, Mike said to make it rowdy. I thought it was too busy Mike wanted to keep it, so it stayed. This song is all his, the next one is mine. The hard part of that, is sitting back and allowing another’s preferences to trump over your own. :)

There is no real padding on this one, so it’s pretty stark. On the vocals; well Mike is a guitar player first and not a ringer of a vocalists. What we have is the best he can do. I didn’t think it came across as bad, but yeah he’s no Freddie Mercury. Our ultimate plan is to eventually find a vocalists that is as serious about singing as Mike is with guitar and I am with keys, the same with finding a drummer Once again, it’s a matter of needing a better product, to solicit better players, for a better product. Perhaps it’s at the point where I should be doing open mikes and the sort, to fill the gaps in what we are missing?

Fun song, lots of Jethro Tull sonic images in there.

Stuff I like:
Overall feel of the song, most of the guitar work, rambling bar room piano, general mix.

Stuff I'm not crazy about:
Canned drums (although the tones you guys are getting are much better than on past projects). It is what it is. Not crazy about the flange/delay on the guitar. I think a simpler pure guitar/amp tone would work better. Personal preference.

Unlike others I am not so concerned with absolute pitch on the vocals for this one. It is more important with some songs than others. Ian Anderson, Bob Dylan, Joe Walsh and others often sing outside the key and it works for them.

I hear a lot of good songs like this on the custom rock station in Fergus Falls, MN. The overall recording is a tad muddy but I am sure when the final mix is done, the song will smoke.

I kind of agre with Paper Dog on this. Not the midgets analogy, but overall Dog is right on. You've got a good structure, framework here, but I keep "feeling" another part that could happen somewhere later in the song, a different bridge of some kind. Most definitely if you record enough tunes like this you will attract a drummer and other members. I saw on your profile "originals only." Bravo! I'd like someday to be in an all original band.

The simplistic rhythm pattern is a detractor.

A more complicated rhythm figure would benefit this tune.

I listened, it's pretty good overall. Not enough "bottom". A real drummer and good bass line would help. The lyrics are a little inane; what does a dead end turn even mean? Rock on!
