My cellphone is a Spint Epic. When it came out it was a "big" deal. There were billboards all over the city extolling its virtues. Now less than two years after I bought it, Sprint doesn't sell them at their stores. I guess in the tech world when you buy something it's obsolete already. Amazing.

Bob That has always been the case. If you see a new product come out, wait about 6 mo before you buy it... Price drops radically, In 9-12 months, the support for it drops radically. I;m thinking of becoming a Luddite, maybe organize a Burning-PC festival...with a flaming effigy of every tech logo in the industry

Some companies stop supporting older OS's then you either get left behind or buy what's new.
Years ago I worked for a DOD contractor and we had met with some Sony reps. don't remember why but...
They talked about the Walkman and said at the time of its release there were nearly 20 different versions of the product more advanced than the original. But to recoup R&D they released a new model every 6 months or so.

Bob, I still carry a Razor phone, remember those? LOL, its about to give up the ghost so I guess I will have to get current before long.

"Forced obsolescense" - it's the only way manufacturers can keep selling products.

Its's the same with TV's , cars ,washing machines ,and about everything you buy today... We've become a disposable society... And even the values taught in schools and a lot of churches today seem the same. Get married and don't like em, get a divorce! Very few build or work to make things last anymore. Even the materials I buy are sh*t and cost me thousands every year in warranties.

I wonder if we put out our first CD will it be obsolete?

Funny question Bob? for some folks I would say that CDs are obsolete, my kids dont buy cds anymore, its all I-Tunes

But there is a resurgance of people wanting vinyl these days, I dont know what your audience would be, but vinyl might be something to think about, you would stand out from the crowd, you just have to attract the audiphile junkies.

jw - agree: for a lot of young people, CDs are obsolete. They are not aware/don't care that the MP3 sound and crappy earbuds they use deliver lousy sound. They are happy with 'like it now, buy it now' with downloads.
Remember the thrill we used to get buying a new album, bringing it home, ripping off the pastic wrap, puttin the needle down on side 1, then presusing the cover for liner notes, hidden pictures and meanings, etc.
Kids don't know what they're missing!

GMB, economics are totally different, I would wait for monthes to get a new album and then just wear it out, while my son has 8000 songs in his I Pod, or whatever he uses these days.

Its a whole different experience, but it is what it is.

My favorite albums to look at were Yes albums, its funny when I watched the movie Avatar, the landscape reminded me of the old Yes albums, the upside down islands floating in the sky, stuff like that.

In my case (My first cd) , beer coasters will never be obsolete

LOL Slacker I understand where you are coming from, the funny thing about music is if you keep doing the same thing long enough it will cycle back to what you are doing.

Music is part of the times it was created in. Baroque music, although still popular to listen to (Bach, Handel, etc) is considered archaic (obsolete) by the critics and scholars. As musicians it's not our job to decide, it's just our job to write, record and perform.

Should you bother to make a CD? Yes, if it means something to you. But there's no reason you HAVE to anymore. My kids have the equivalent of my entire library on their phones and other devices. Is the quality as good? of course not, but they trade that for ease of use.

With phones, it is not a marketing gimmick - the technology is maturing so rapidly that the marketing guys have trouble keeping up with. A lot of science fiction stuff is becoming reality in a hurry.

The whole computer thing is starting to be about phones. It's really jumping and I had to give up my ancient cell phone (4 yrs old!) for a smart phone simply because I work in the industry and it is not really optional anymore.

I agree with you other obsolete people, it really ticks me off when I can't get something fixed but have to replace. Seems cheesey. And expensive.

So get a good guitar. My mine are 12 years old and 30-40 years old (not sure - Tele Esquire) and they are both sounding even better than before and seem to be more playable. And I can get them fixed, buy parts and modify till the cows come home.
