Can someone point me to the guidelines and bylaws concerning "modern" rock and roll.
I hear the term 'dated' thrown around way too much.
Wtf is dated? Wtf is new?

"dated" is any presentation where, by artifice or appurtenance, by structure, architecture or aesthetic, can be linked to a known artist or group of artists already in publication.

I would think the definition of NEW would be obvious.

To me dated (really just a shortening of outdated) just implies that the work in question is similar to work from a previous time that is now generally regarded as old or obsolete. But there's a lot of 'critic-snob' attached to the word; it's not for the artist to decide what is current or in style, only to work and let the critics be damned.

Music can sound like it's from another era and be considered Retro or Old school and it's generally a compliment. Dated is a personal taste kind of thing but you know it when you hear it... something that sounds old but not good today.
To me Jack White, Black Keyes, Kings of Leon are retro or old school. Not modern.
Paramore would be modern rock to me. As an example.

Dated= outdated= out of favor.

A classic 56 Corvette is old but never dated or out of favor. A 51 Chevy coupe is just an old car. It is a subjective appraisal but even a 5 yr old kid knows a cool car when he sees it. Music has similar lines between classic sounds and just plain old:

Beatles Abbey Road- Cool, timeless classic
Cream Disraeli Gears- Cool, timeless classic
Clapton There's one in every crowd- Forgettable, dated

(too much chorus or flange on guitar, heavily gated drum sound= dated and out of favor.)

This is the freshest thing I've heard on the radio in ages. Nothing is dated about it. It is pop.

Both are as fresh as I can imagine. So anti-dated. Lol.

The vultures lead tone is twisted, demented , and DELICIOUS!

Vultures sound kind of hippy Rock'ish to me.
Foo Fighters, if you step back and listen, are really nothing more than a classic rock band with some "modern" chord voicings added in. The kind of chords you might hear Paramore using.

Crisp clear powerhouse vocalist. That is a real front-man there. He doesn't sound too much like any one vocalist to me. A smidgen like train's singer. Just a solid rock vocalist. The riff in that song is a LOT like Zepplin's "good times bad times". That do have an overall classic sound. 60's - 70's music with no surprises. I guess I'm calling it classic instead of dated because I love that era. So again it's just a taste thing.

Basically I'm going to hate music if it sounds like glam 80's pop metal or like the bad grunge rip offs. Like creed.

When I heard this song on the radio I was sure it was some LOCAL 40 something 80's leftovers who never cut the mullets. So simple and formulaic. Yet I listened again and again. And they were YOUNG!

As long as it's not some dude going deedely deedley deedley deedley at 1000 BPM to a bass stuck on gallop mode ... I'm good.

I guess I don't consider music dated when it is played live. When I hear some movie soundtracks, they really sound dated. But in my opinion good music is never dated, it simply becomes classic.

come to think of it,
you should define dated as easily identified with a particular era.
as a matter of fact that's prolly a much more accurate definition.

gtZip, you are probably hearing this term from younger listeners because your music has a 90's metal feel, one of the hardest things a rocker has to come to grips with is the passage of time.

not long ago, perhaps a year, a friend asked me to go see a local band up in baltimore, well the headliner was a trio out of NY, bass player supposed to be associated with the Stern show or something.
Now these boys had the moves!, better act than I have seen on stage in a long time, the were tight they were young and they were obviously talented.
Had some originals interspersed with rush, aerosmith and zeppelin I think.
then It struck me.
this act would have been a sensation 30+ years ago.
I can't even think what kind of reaction groups would have gotten if they were trying to sell me 35 yo music acts in 1975
it was such a waste, I thought
especially cause the place was empty.
and all the other bars in this enclave were obviously packed.

it's kind of cute when old guys like us here strum toys in the attic or cross eyed mary and get weepy and nostalgic.
but to see the young people today so illiterate and devoid of inspiration is kind of depressing.
