The greatest Mom I know happens to be the one I'm married too. The reason,,,
Every time life brings on some little calamity, she is able to step back and see the longer term view. Some how she has managed to steer, even the worst case scenario into something positive. I think she has given my kids something I would totally mess up.

God bless all the moms!

My wife and my mother are freakin saints despite their human frailty.

They have both tolerated and forgiven my indiscretion for 30 - 52 years depending of which you speak.

I'm a blessed man.

The earliest history of Mothers Day dates back to the ancient annual spring festival the Greeks dedicated to maternal goddesses. The Greeks used the occasion to honor Rhea, wife of Cronus and the mother of many deities of Greek mythology.

Ancient Romans, too, celebrated a spring festival, called Hilaria dedicated to Cybele, a mother goddess. It may be noted that ceremonies in honour of Cybele began some 250 years before Christ was born. The celebration made on the Ides of March by making offerings in the temple of Cybele lasted for three days and included parades, games and masquerades. The celebrations were notorious enough that followers of Cybele were banished from Rome.

Early Christians celebrated a Mother's Day of sorts during the festival on the fourth Sunday of Lent in honor of the Virgin Mary, the Mother of Christ. In England the holiday was expanded to include all mothers. It was then called Mothering Sunday.

And here i thought it was so much simpler...along the lines of paying some tribute to our mothers for putting up with us... ;)

Etu

There is a more prosaic explaination for Mother's Day in America: called Hallmark Greating Cards. They've created numerous holidays such as Father's Day, popularization of Valentine's day.

Additionally, the convicted torturer who dreamed up Kwanza out of whole cloth wouldn't ever have gotten off the ground without them.

So there it is - create a holiday and be sure to let Hallmark know. How about International Metal Grandpa's Day? 8)
