Musical Instruments and Insurance

This is just a heads up thread.

A friend of mine recently was broken into, his home, all of his gun collection and his wifes jewelry was stolen.

We were talking and he said he had over $20,000 of guns and his wife had around the same amount of jewelry. When he contacted his insurance carrier, he was informed that he only had $2500 of coverage for the guns or the jewelry with a $1000 deductible.

Last week I researched my own homeowners insurance policy and I had basically the same thing.

I also have a $1000 deductible, with a $2500 dollar limit on my guitars and amps, I have around $25,000 worth of guitars and amps, not to mention our bands pa system.

This week Im in the process of taking pictures of all my equipment, listing the names, serial numbers and approximate replacement values on all my equipment. My agent said that I can add a rider to my policy and cover all of my gear, it may make the premium go up slightly, but it would be far better than getting shocked if say someone stole a couple of my LPs and an amp, and I only got $1500 to cover them.

I know there are other older musicians on this site, that maybe like me collect gear or over the years have accumulated a lot of gear.

I would encourage any of you to examine your insurance in regards to your musical gear. I have a very large contents of house amount on my house that will cover everything, however its only active if I have a fire and everything is destroyed, theft its not covered.

Just a heads up.

Right now, you have touched off a wave of people filing for "permit to carry"..

Why do people kill burglars and then call the cops? Well something like this I imagine..

That and all the local gun shows are "filling up".."and for an extra 100$ we don't even need no stinking paperwork".

Bad guys best be packing real heat before they end up like a tasty deer that stood too long in the drive and got popped while watching the moon.

I love burglars, "they make the best sausage". LOL
(You use more spices than with boar, but it's similar)

this is the cheapest insurance I've found. They won't cover instruments left in a vehicle (home insurance does that) but otherwise, they provide insurance tailored for professional musicians from equipment to health/life.

I was informed straight away by my insurance carrier that if I waned my instruments and equipment covered a separate policy was the best way.

Never been so glad most of my stuff is junk.

That and I seldom miss when I shoot at the short ranges.
You just hesitate a little before you center-mass them. lol

Insurance companies are the only thing I rate lower than politicians.

I never thought about that JW, I thought my
homeowners insurance would cover this, I
have $50,000 insurance on the contents, I
thought that if my house burnt(never really
thought about getting broke in to) that my house
would be replaced, I have it insured for
replacement value, and I'd get $50,000 for
the contents. I do have evrything recorded on my
camcorder, and the pictures burnt to CD.

My agent is a old high school friend, and his family
has took care of my family for decades, but I think
I'll run this buy him. I'm more concerned with these
guys that bring these giant amps over and then want
to leave them till next time cause they're to heavy.
I feel responsible for their equipment, but I'm not
sure my insurance man would.
Interesting.

Lynard I would encourage you to ask your insurance agent about this, I was shocked that I have had all this equipment in my house for the past 15-20 yrs and really had no insurance on it.

Maybe yours was written up different, but it is worth looking into, especially with other peoples stuff at your house.

Anybody else reading this, its worth looking into, cause a few amps and guitars can add up real quick.

In my case I had to buy half mine back a few years ago in my divorce, if I got cleaned out now, it would be a mess. Only see a real $1500 in my pocket.
