A couple of days ago I was in San Francisco visiting my son who is going to the Art Institute to study film-making. He is a veteran of Korea and Afghanistan (drummer for the Army) and bought a yacht to live on in Sausalito bay.
Anyway, just a block away is one of the most historical recording studios in America, The Plant Sausalito, where Journey, the Fray, Fleetwood Mac, Sly and the Family Stone, Rick James, Van Halen, etc, etc, etc all recorded their best albums.
I asked my son about it and he told me that some young girl had bought it 10 years ago with an insurance settlement so she could get in backstage to concerts in the San Fran area. He said it has been closed since then and up for sale.
Later that day we were driving by and I saw a couple of nice cars there, so I stopped and knocked on the door to see what it would cost to record there. ($1,500 per day btw). Luckily the former owner is back in the saddle and they are doing mostly film work there with George Lucas these days.
It was so cool to walk in those rooms and hear the stories of the heydays!?!
he showed us the small room where Rick James lived for a while. It was only big enough for his waterbed and still smells like cocaine. My favorite story was about Sammy Hagar trying to get into the building one day when it was pouring down and he had both hands full of guitars. He knocked on the door and Sly Stone came walking out, letting the door slam behind him. Later that evening, Sly comes back and Sammy asks, "hey man, wtf? Why didn't you hold the door for me when you saw my hands were full and I'm standing in the rain??
Sly just said, "My name is Sly and I don't hold doors".
Anyway...I volunteered my son to be an intern at the studio and for video production (not to mention drummer) and it looks like he has a new job. I'm kind of excited about having that contact.
I hear that Stewart Copeland lives in San Fran and wonder how much it would cost to get him for a day?
.
