First gig?
Here's some things to consider:
Call the host, and tell him you're just verifying the date and time you'll play. They usually appreciate that kinda thing, anyway.
While talking to him, remind him of the kind of music you'll play, and for how long.
Mention any pay, in passing: you don't want any surprises.
If you're doing it for free, ask for something in return! Food, drinks, gas money, a favour with someone, whatever. Don't be afraid to ask . . .
Plan on getting there 45 minutes earlier than you think you need to. Set-up sometimes takes longer than you think it will.
Bring a spare of everything.'; spare amp, spare cables, spare mike . . . I always have a 2nd set of clothes in my car's trunk, in case I spill a coffee on myself, or something.
With your music, save something in reserve, for the 3rd act.
Don't play any brand-new songs which you think you
might have already learned; play your best stuff only.
Never stop a song; if you make a mistake - s'ok. Keep right on playing. If you don't miss a beat they probably won't notice it.
Before you start any song, just give yourself TWO EXTRA SECONDS to calm your mind of all thoughts; relax, and enjoy.
Start your songs a little slower than normal. When you're performing for a crowd it's easy to start a song a little fast, and sometimes that makes it a little harder to play, depending on the song.
First gig? Don't try any new innovations with songs; just play the songs the way you're used to playing them: simple. They'll like them just fine.
Once you're used to performing, innovations will just happen, anyway. Until then - just play them simple.
Then - once on stage - foget all this, and just have fun!
