Hey on my player in bandmix I loaded
a couple of songs I just recorded with
the new band, me. I play all the instruments
and recorded it all on a Line6 Spider Jam III.
Give it a listen if you would, and tell me what
you think, of the music, the mix, the songs,
I did all 3.

I recorded DWI this afternoon, laid down
6 tracks, and there it is.

All comments appreciated, good, bad, or indifferent.

Good start, but I don't think its a good idea to rush through them... The equipment sounds like it will work fine for your projects..

To me it seemed like you had everything you needed but you jammed it all in together like a chef salad. That made it sound like a 1 man jam with no real direction. Hey, you asked.[/b]

Thanks for everyones response.

JCP, your to kind, thank you, I'm to hear my
kids say it OCD, so I do tend to obsess.(This
wasn't a problem when I was obsessed with
making money,lol). I can't stop writing

Thanks Dog, but I'm in a little bit of a rush like
JCP said I ain't getting any younger(only better
looking.)lol

Thanks jsantos, I love screaming guitar, and could
listen to it all day myself.

Your probably right Klug, I did jam it all together,
so I guess your refering to the mix. This is my 1st
attempt at recording, and I'm not happy with the
volume levels(or mix), of the tunes either, but
I'll keep plugging away, and I know I will get better
at it. I love a chef salad, and it is a one man band,
the direction is recording better thru practice.

Thanks Jahva, I appreciate all your comments and
help. The only way to get better at this production is
to keep producing. Like Klug said, some of it felt jammed
together, I was going to add some syntheziser licks,
but it just sounded like 2 much. That's the thing about being
a musician there's always something you need to get better
at, and I show that I have lots of room for improvement.

Thanks again everybody for all your comments, I find them
helpful coming from other musicians. ( I've listened to all
you guys stuff, and it lets me know you know what your talking
about.

The rush is on going to record 2 more this week.

A great highly prolific studio musician said it all in Guitar Player mag during an interview. Less is more. Don't over play. Always leave your audience wanting more.

I think it needs to be thinned out quite a bit so it can "breathe". And that is a comment from someone who always over plays. When I add a jam track to a song, I end up chopping out about 80% of the guitar chops, usually the best ones just because they distract from the music. My first impression of anything that I record is usually "Kill the guitar player".

I know your right Slacker, I'd like
to include a synthesizer track on
there or two, but the songs already
felt full. I'd like to get a large band
sound, just not sure how to record it.
I'll keep practicing 8)

It's pretty easy actually. Just let each instrument shine in its own time. Whenever a big band plays, certain groups like sax, or clarinet, or other instruments always took their turn while the others backed off or quit playing. Basics to keep are drums, rhythm and vocals (At least until the instrumental portion cuts in). Keep the drums and rhythm and put them slightly more in the background. Then move the vocals up front. When you have two lead instruments going at the same time, as some recordings do, sent one hard right and the other hard left on your mix. Then bring them in towards the center of the mix if you feel they are too far apart.

If you ad a synth track, back the lead chops back or cut them out completely whenever you want another instrument "center stage". Bring the solo instrument volume up to fill the void of the vocal, then back stuff back down when the vocals begin again.

The suggestions aren't from a bible of recording tips but they are a few things that would make your recordings sound full yet uncluttered. The good part is that with many recording / editing programs there is non destructive editing options that let you keep the original mix in tact. :)

Thanks Slacker I'll do that when I get a recorder
that will let me do it, or I can figure out. I'm a total
technical and computer loser, I've always been a
live player, sing play lead and front the band. I'm
to old and grouchy now and don't want to play in the
bars at all, so I'm going to learn how to record. These
are my 1st recordings, and I hope to improve on them.
Recording a new song now.

Lynard, you could look into getting a Line 6 Toneport UX-2 recording interface for a little over a 100 dollars....I have one but never hooked it up to the pc yet.. Morris made some decent recordings with his, and he suggested it to me and got mine at Zzounds

"LESS IS MORE" is exactly how I would say it too, keep it sparse and try to emulate Nile Rodgers produced projects, THE BASS AND DRUM should be your foundation of any tune, and then the rest of the musical instruments notes should be embellishments and icing on the cake.. look at my tune "Joyful Noise" I have sold many downloads to a European audience since it leaves an impression after the "noise" has stopped and you can hum the melody of the guitar afterwards..the guitar is saxophone like in arrangement and was intended that way..did not want it busying it up too much..
