Nawww don't be a hater GT. I love those guys. Somebody has got to keep the doors open and the cash flowing at music stores or there soon won't be any left. While I admit to owning way too much gear I bought nearly all of it used and very cheap.

When a local musician gets the itch for new gear he usually needs to sell his old stuff fast. I am always willing to help em out if the gear is quality, it is something I want, and the price is right. If it turns out I don't like it I can usually turn around and sell it for what I paid. Sort of a free trial period.

Why would you care what amp someone decides to get excited about?
that's kinda neurotic, if you think about it.

there is actually a ton of money not to mention notoriety, to be made in the boutique amp business.
if you could do it, which you can't you. would be admired.

Practice and study are the only things that make you
a better player.

Pretty soon these new amps and guitars(all instruments?)
will be played by the computer, and no talent will be needed.
Technology hasn't changed music, there's still only 7 notes,
most can't seem to understand them.

guys look into the face of a solid fully functional 66' twin reverb and say "it's nothing I have a computer"

real sound from real toys is cool Tubes rule and chips are for rap stars.
truth is I can get your guitar hero stuff at any best buy. and I have some of that stuff too.. it's ok for what it is.
but you can never get this,
so you turn into a snob, just a snob of a different color.

so take your super compressed, spam in a can, no headroom, weak-knee'd, yellow bellied, gammy handed, digitally programmed buy a china man cause he knows what you want sound;
out to the club, and I will take these here. and your sound will suck ass and mine will hit the back of the room with truth and power.

GZ That is a sign of a true professional to take any gear and make music with it. I have been playing music since the late 60,s There have been times that I could not afford decent gear. I had to watch my rich friends whom NEVER practiced or studied because Mommy and Daddy handed them everything on a silver platter. There was some envy there however it did NOT stop my quest to be the best musician with the best tone I could muster! Now those same rich friends are bald and fat and I am well, fat with a mullet! The search for the perfect tone is never ending to a true professional. I beleive you should be in competition with yourself and not worry about what others are doing. I went to support a freinds band this past weekend and ran into a person such as is the topic of your thread. At least that is how I have veiwed him in the past. After talking with him I discovered he put away his PRS and expensive amps and is now playing thru his little $600.00 crate Palamino amp! My point is that it is easy to let envy cloud your judgement of folks. No one is perfect so give them a break! Thats my advise for what it is worth!

JH I think you hit on it at least for me... it's about budget. As much as i would like to own some better gear it's not in the cards right now.

And if you can afford some new toys, I aint mad at ya.... enjoy!!

People who want and can afford what's new is a good thing ... it helps to keep the industry moving.
And as Johnny was saying it helps out the used market as well.

I don't hate them but they annoy me: blues guys in their 50's who can afford to buy vintage guitars and amps and make sure everyone knows about it, all the while they're just average players at best. BTW having a SRV hat does not make you play like SRV.

I seriously doubt if you've even heard a tiny fraction of my output so your opinion is dismissed.

I design and manufacture all of my own amps and pre amps because I can't get the sounds I like from commercial amps. I have vintage guitars, but I prefer the ones that I constructed from shops that make the raw components, since I don't have all the wood working tools I would need.

Since the hardest person I know to please when it comes to tone is myself, I'm happy doing it this way.

Transformers, speakers, tubes, resistors and caps have no idea when they were made, and the tolerances are relatively identical from old to new. So if you prefer an old tube amp or a new one of the same model, where is the difference other than the snob price built into the vintage unit?

I can understand someone who likes the tone of a vintage amplifier wanting to have one just to say he has one, but I don't understand this aspect of purchasing gear.?

The lines of pre dinged guitars made to look like you have had them on the road for 30 years? What's up wid dat?

I know the type. I find these guys pretty entertaining when I see $15K in guitar gear onstage for a local open mic night. It is pretty rare to find one of these guys who can really play. I do own a few nice vintage pieces but I bought em for $200 in 1971 at a pawn shop. They are now part of my own personal music history and not my gig rig.

The simple fact is that 90% of great guitar tone comes from our fingers and not our gear. EVH or Satch could pick a Squier and a Pro Jr. off the rack, spend a few minutes setting up for their tastes and blow all of us out of the water in no uncertain terms. It's called talent and they have it in spades.

I watched a 14 year old kid with a Yamaha guitar take down some guy with a Gibson Les Paul Robot, a Marshall stack full of greenbacks and nasty vintage head.

I told the kid afterwards that he smoked the other guy and if that guy had an ounce of class, he'd have given you his guitar or at least thanked him for the ass whoop he laid down on him.

10 minutes later they were trying to get me to pick up the reins.
I had to tell him the truth..
