Not really a fair comparison...
Both had comparitive styles, respectively:

Mathis was more a suburban balladeer at heart
SInatra was more cosmopolitan jazzer at heart.

That distinction makes them separate , non competing styles

Mathis made extensive use of vibrato in his voice
Sinatra made extensive uses of dragging phrases (crooning) in his lyric

Both were titans in their own right

I grew up listening to a lot of the crooners. At least that's what I called them.
That style and Motown was all my mom listened to when I was a little kid. She really loved Nat King Cole, Al Martino, Bing Crosby and of course Frank Sinatra.
If I had to choose one over the other... I'd take Nat King Cole he was smooth as silk and of course... unforgettable.

I always picture Sinatra with his trenchcoat over his shoulder, a smoke hanging from the side of his mouth, hat on crooked. The bar is closing and it's three in the morning and he has the blues.

When my father first started feeling old I got him a copy of Sinatra's classic, 'When I was 17." I may have to look that up and listen to it myself - time is closing in. 8)

Buble, Connick and many others kill him at his own game.

This however is untouchable.

I just listened to Buble singing "Just the way you look tonight".
You're kidding right He took a great song and made it sound like a wuss singing it! :?
He couldn't hold a candle to Sinatra version. It sounded like a resort singer doing a weak jazz version. Not even close to Blue Eyes!!!! :P
